About the Role

As a Paraprofessional, you will assist a teacher throughout their daily classroom activities, helping schedule and implement programs in accordance with the curriculum, as well as performing general classroom and clerical duties such as maintaining a clean and safe environment or preparing educational materials.

Responsibilities

• Educate individual students (one-on-one or small group) who are on IEPs under the direction of the supervising special education teacher.
• Assist the special education teacher in the use and adaptation of a wide range of therapy techniques and equipment (when applicable).
• Participate in the implementation of the individualized rehabilitative plan for specific students (when applicable).
• Attend all staff meetings and recommended training programs and conferences, including in-service training as required by the state/parish.
• Confer and plan with teachers related to IEP objectives and/or modifications, and provide documentation.
• Work with the teacher to develop classroom schedules and prepare materials related to IEPs or modifications/accommodations.
• Provide assistance to students with bathroom and other physical needs, as appropriate and necessary.
• Assist, where appropriate, in loading and unloading special education students from transportation.
• Assist students with various projects, crafts, and curriculum tasks.

Student Management

• Contribute to the management and modification of a student's behavior within and outside the classroom as necessary.
• Participate in restraining disruptive or dangerous physical behavior as requested or assigned.
• Accompany the teacher and student on class trips to assist with supervision of behavior and safety issues.
• Provide safety and security during the transportation of students to and from school.

School/Community Relations

• Handle sensitive and confidential information, documents, communications, and incidents with discretion.
• Cooperate and share professionally with other members of the staff.

Requirements

• High School degree, GED, or equivalent experience.
• Experience in working with children, preferably children with disabilities.
• Demonstrates enthusiasm and commitment toward the job and the mission of the company.
• Ability to work and interact with individuals at all levels of the organization.
• Ability to organize, prioritize, and manage multiple priorities.
• Displays good communication skills and uses common sense and a street-smart approach to student psychology.
• Ability to consistently be at work, be on time, follow instructions, respond to management direction, and solicit feedback to improve performance.
• Excellent interpersonal skills: courteous, professional, and helpful.
• Basic computer skills in Windows (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and Student Information System (SIS).
• Good knowledge of company and school policies and procedures.
• Detailed knowledge of Federal, State, and local requirements for K-12 schools and charter school law preferred.

Work Environment

While performing the responsibilities of this position, the work environment includes usual office working conditions.

Physical Demands

• Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force as frequently needed to move objects.
• Travel within or outside of state may be required.
