Paramedic Part-Time MidShift

Provides care and support to patients in the Emergency Department, including transportation, nutritional support, routine hygienic care, selective respiratory procedures, dressing applications/changes, vital signs, selective treatments, equipment retrieval, and basic support of activities of daily living.

Responsibilities

  • Collects and conveys information to RN and physician regarding the health status of patients throughout their Emergency Department visit.
  • Communicates information, both verbally and in writing, to the RN for development and modification of the patient’s care plan.
  • Explains procedures and treatments to patients to gain cooperation and ease apprehension.
  • Keeps patients informed of their treatment plan and status throughout their stay.
  • Performs specialized work initiating emergent or appropriate care within scope of practice and under the supervision of the Emergency Department Registered Nurse.
  • Assists both emergency department patients and outpatients to establish and maintain effective patient flow.
  • Assists patients into gowns as appropriate, takes and records vital signs, measures and records input and output.
  • Attaches oxygen, oxygen saturation, and cardiac monitor as requested or needed.
  • Initiates lifesaving measures such as opening an airway, ventilation using bag valve mask, hemorrhage control, chest compressions, stabilization of fractures, cervical spine alignment, etc.
  • Stabilizes and extricates injured patients from vehicles at the emergency department entrance.
  • Assists patients to and from vehicles and the emergency department, and transports patients as directed.
  • Cleans and dresses wounds, sets up and assists with procedures as directed.
  • Performs phlebotomy duties, basic laboratory procedures, wound cultures, Point of Care testing, EKGs, and application of splints.
  • Inserts, monitors, and discontinues non-medicated IV catheters in adults and pediatric populations and documents as required.
  • Assists in the maintenance and operation of the department by reporting defective equipment, cleaning and stocking rooms, answering phones, and retrieving or transporting supplies.
  • May administer limited medications as ordered by the attending physician, listed on the “Paramedic Medication Administration List” upon successful completion of the "ED Paramedic Pharmacology Exam.”
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • State certified EMT-P course completion.
  • EMT-P Certification, State of Indiana.
  • Competencies for routine clinical tests and procedures must be obtained within one year of employment.
  • ACLS and PALS must be obtained within 6 months of hire.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (American Heart Association).
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification (American Heart Association).
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification (American Heart Association) or ENPC.

Qualifications

  • Preferred: One (1) year of experience working as a paramedic.
  • Preferred: GED or High School diploma.
