State certified EMT-P with Indiana Paramedic certification. Competencies for routine clinical tests and procedures must be obtained within one year; ACLS and PALS must be obtained within six months of hire.
Responsibilities
- Collects and conveys information to RN and physician regarding the health status of patients throughout their Emergency Department visit.
- Communicates information, both verbally and in writing, to the RN for development and modification of the patient’s care plan.
- Explains procedures and treatments to patients to gain cooperation and ease apprehension; keeps patients informed of their treatment plan and status.
- Performs specialized work initiating emergent or appropriate care within scope of practice and under the supervision of the Emergency Department Registered Nurse.
- Assists both emergency department patients and outpatients to establish and maintain effective patient flow.
- Assists patients into gowns as appropriate; takes and records vital signs; measures and records input and output.
- Attaches oxygen, oxygen saturation, and cardiac monitors as requested or needed.
- Initiates lifesaving measures (e.g., opening an airway, bag-valve-mask ventilation, hemorrhage control, chest compressions, fracture stabilization, cervical spine alignment).
- Stabilizes and extricates injured patients from vehicles at the emergency department entrance; assists patients to and from vehicles and the department.
- Transports patients as directed; cleans and dresses wounds; sets up and assists with procedures.
- Performs phlebotomy, basic laboratory procedures, wound cultures, Point of Care testing, EKGs, and application of splints.
- Inserts, monitors, and discontinues non-medicated IV catheters in adults and pediatric patients; documents as required.
- Assists in the maintenance and operation of the department by reporting defective equipment, cleaning and stocking rooms, answering phones, and retrieving or transporting supplies.
- May administer limited medications listed on the “Paramedic Medication Administration List” upon successful completion of the "ED Paramedic Pharmacology Exam" and as ordered by the attending physician.

Qualifications
- State certified EMT-P course completion.
- EMT-P Certification, State of Indiana.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (American Heart Association).
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification (American Heart Association).
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification (American Heart Association) or ENPC (must be obtained within six months of hire).
- Preferred: One year of experience working as a paramedic.
