About the Role

The Emergency Medical Care Technician - Paramedic (EMCT-P) provides basic and advanced life support to ill or injured patients in the pre-hospital setting. This position operates independently and assists Paramedic or EMT partners in assessing and treating critically ill or injured patients, including neonates, infants, children, adolescents, adults, and seniors. Responsibilities include operating hydraulic gurneys, power lifts, emergency and non-emergency ambulance driving, and using portable ambulance medical equipment.

Responsibilities

• Patient Care
  • Utilize a team approach when assisting and delivering patient care.
  • Critically assess situations and call for additional resources as needed.
  • Manage or assist in the assessment and treatment of simple and multi-system trauma and medical emergencies.
  • Administer CPR for extended periods of time.
  • Identify and manage life-threatening problems and assist partner(s) in managing them.
  • Obtain manual vital signs.
  • Interact with patients under a wide variety of circumstances, including unpredictable or emergency situations.
  • Professionally interact with all levels of pre-hospital care providers from various agencies within the response region.
  • Interact directly with patients, families, the general public, local community groups, law enforcement, fire department personnel, physicians, and nurses.
  • Safely work around violent and other high-risk patient populations.
  • Assess each situation, remain calm in high-stress environments, and work around loud noises and flashing lights.
  • Document patient care.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skills to care for the physical and developmental needs of patients across the lifespan.
• Ambulance & Equipment Preparedness
  • Assist partner in ensuring that ambulance and work stations are stocked, cleaned, and ready for daily use.
  • Demonstrate expert knowledge in ALS and BLS equipment (setup, use, and management).
  • Maintain familiarity with all GMT equipment (use, operation, and troubleshooting).
  • Assist partner(s) in applying splints, KED, and hair traction splint as needed.
  • Assist in the rapid deployment of equipment for patient care.
• Communications
  • Interpret written, oral, and diagnostic form instructions and relay critical information to partner(s) or clinician(s).
  • Communicate via radio and cell phone.
  • Communicate patient care and continuing needs to receiving clinicians.
  • Communicate with all levels of pre-hospital care providers, patients, families, and the public.
• Emergency & Fleet Vehicles
  • Operate emergency vehicles during non-emergent (no lights or sirens) and emergent (lights and sirens) situations.
  • Operate GMT fleet vehicles.
  • Assist with securing patients or other riders with seatbelts or appropriate restraining devices.
  • Assist with securing equipment inside the ambulance, specifically in the patient compartment.
• Education
  • Maintain current knowledge of pre-hospital and emergency medicine trends.
  • Act as a preceptor/mentor for new hire EMTs, Paramedic students, and new hire Paramedics, including direct oversight of EMT partners.
• Compliance/Safety
  • Report safety-related incidents in a timely fashion through the Midas/RDE tool.
  • Attend all safety-related training programs and perform work in a safe manner.
  • Monitor the work environment for safety issues and ensure others perform work safely.
  • Stay current and comply with state and federal regulations/statutes and company policies.
  • Ensure all certifications and/or licenses are up-to-date and valid prior to expiration dates.
  • Complete all company-mandated modules and required job-specific training in the specified time frame.
  • Complete scheduled team approach training on equipment use, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
  • Follow all GMT and Arizona state rules for driving emergency and non-emergent vehicles.
  • Promptly report vehicle-related incidents per NAH driving policy.
  • Dress in appropriate GMT-approved uniform and wear required PPE.
  • Adhere to NAH policy CP 111 regarding driving records.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED (Required).
• Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in a related field (Preferred).
• Arizona certification as a Certified Emergency Paramedic (EMCT-P) (Required).
• Current BLS, ALS, and PALS certifications (American Heart Association) (Required).
• Valid Arizona Driver's License with no moving violations within the prior 36 months (Required).
• Provide a current official copy of driving record prior to employment and annually (Required).
• PHTLS or ITLS certification (Preferred).
• National Registry Paramedic certification (Preferred).
• Obtain and maintain appropriate clinical competencies as assigned by departmental leaders.
• Prior experience providing patient care in a busy EMS system (Preferred).
• Prior experience working in patient care (hospital-based) (Preferred).
