Responsibilities

  • Provide basic and advanced medical care, both emergent and non-emergent, to all study subjects, as appropriate.
  • Independently direct the resuscitation and stabilization of a subject in any life-threatening situation using both accepted medical protocols and any study-specific treatments.
  • Monitor and record Adverse Events (AEs).
  • Review all active AEs prior to dose of study drug and determine if it is safe for subject to proceed with study procedures and/or dosing; confer with operational management and/or the physician/investigator as needed.
  • Review all active adverse events daily and deliver a daily report of AEs to the physicians.
  • Act as primary subject safety contact for all study subjects in the Clinic.
  • Monitor cardiac telemetry for potentially serious arrhythmia and intervene as necessary.
  • Perform technical procedures in the Phase I unit including blood collection, vital signs, and ECGs.
  • Assist Project Managers, Physicians, and study teams in the logistical planning of study conduction workflows.
  • Perform all forms of dosing, including IV, IM, SQ, and oral.
  • Assess out-of-range values for symptomology and may medically intervene should study subject’s safety be in question.

Education and Experience

  • High/Secondary school diploma or equivalent and relevant formal academic/vocational qualification.
  • Previous experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job (comparable to at least 4 years, which should include 3 years’ experience as a Paramedic on an ALS unit and/or in a clinical setting).
  • Texas Licensed/Certified EMT-Paramedic and American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification required.
  • In some cases, an equivalency consisting of a combination of appropriate education, training, and/or directly related experience will be considered sufficient.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Strong paramedic skills including airway management, phlebotomy, I.V. establishment, and injections (intramuscular, intradermal, and subcutaneous).
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written) with the ability to communicate with all levels of staff, management, and physicians in a professional and credible manner.
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple complex tasks and emergency medical situations.
  • Ability to perform advanced medical care—both emergent and non-emergent.

Physical Requirements / Work Environment

  • Work is performed in a clinical environment with exposure to biological fluids and potential exposure to infectious organisms.
  • May require long and varied working hours.
  • Frequently stands, twists waists, squats, and bends neck for 4–6 hours per day.
  • Repetitive hand movement of both hands with the ability to make fast, simple, repeated movements of the fingers, hands, and wrists; ability to make precise coordinated movements.
  • Frequent mobility required; occasional crouching, stooping, bending, and twisting of upper body and neck.
  • Moderate lifting (or otherwise movement, carrying, setting, and placement) of 15–30 lbs. with a maximum lift of 35 lbs.
  • Ability to access and use a variety of computer software developed both in-house and off-the-shelf.
  • Ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand; ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.
  • May interact with others, relating and gathering sensitive information across diverse groups.
  • Works with guidance or reliance on oral or written instructions from management.
  • May require periods of intense concentration and the ability to perform under stress while multi-tasking.
  • Regular and consistent attendance is required.

Other Environmental Conditions

Some degree of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) required (safety glasses, gowning, gloves, lab coat, ear plugs, etc.).
