About the Role

This position assists the hospital in the care of patients and performs special technical skills/treatments according to level of knowledge under the supervision of a physician. The role involves providing direct patient care within the scope of a Paramedic license, supporting physicians, nursing, and hospital administration, and ensuring compliance with established objectives, policies, and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct patient care under physician supervision, including:
    • Medical treatment of wounds at basic/intermediate/advanced levels
    • Wound care
    • Administration of medications by pre-established protocol (including vasoactive medications)
    • Drawing bloodwork
    • Placing splints, boots, and similar devices
    • Foley insertion
    • Use of glucometer, I-STAT, Kurin, and vital signs monitoring (including rectal temps for immunocompromised patients)
    • IV fluid administration
  • Administers preset protocols and standing orders as directed by a physician.
  • Performs clinical job duties as defined in the orientation packet, with skills verified annually through competency assessments.
  • Supports hospital staff by adhering to established objectives, policies, and EMTALA regulations.
  • Accurately documents patient-related tasks.
  • Adapts communication and care approach to the specific patient population, respecting privacy and preferences.
  • Remains knowledgeable about current federal, state, and local laws, accreditation standards, and regulatory requirements applicable to the role.
  • Complies with the employer’s Compliance & Privacy Program and Standards of Conduct, reporting any unethical or questionable behaviors.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Graduation from an approved Paramedic Program.
  • Paramedic License in the State of Practice.
  • Certification with the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians as a Paramedic.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification (to be obtained within 90 days of hire).
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification (to be obtained within 90 days of hire).
  • Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) Certification (to be obtained within 30 days of hire).

Skills

  • Computer skills and dexterity for data entry and information retrieval.
  • Proficiency with Windows-style applications, role-specific software, and keyboard use.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present information clearly and professionally.

  • Ability to identify medical emergencies and assist with management.

Physical and Environmental Demands

  • Medium Work: Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, 10 to 25 pounds frequently, and negligible to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.
  • Routine exposure to blood, body fluids, and tissue in a patient care area.
  • Occupational risk for exposure to communicable diseases and hazardous materials (e.g., medications, waste).
