FSA Federal (FSA) is focused on delivering unsurpassed services in support of law enforcement and homeland security. In this role, you will be supporting the overall mission of the United States Attorney's Office (USAO).

About the role

The Sr. Paralegal will support ongoing criminal and civil health care fraud prosecutions, providing legal assistance to Assistant U.S. Attorneys (AUSAs) in the Fraud and White Collar Unit.

Responsibilities

  • Assesses, collects, examines, and analyzes data, evidence, and other information from sources including internal data review platforms (Everlaw, Relativity), public access, and law enforcement databases.
  • Works with assigned AUSAs and federal law enforcement to establish and verify relationships among facts and evidence to build proof for affirmative civil litigation or criminal prosecution.
  • Examines books, ledgers, payroll, cost reports, billing statements, invoices, correspondence, and computer data from health care providers to assess fraud allegations and legal responsibility.
  • Prepares complex legal documents such as indictments, arrest warrants, summonses, motions, orders, plea agreements, subpoenas, and legal memoranda with limited instructions from AUSAs.
  • Clarifies target suspects' or organizations' patterns of operations to recommend investigative approaches and obtains required information from case files or agencies for legal documents.
  • Assists attorneys in trial preparation by compiling trial notebooks, organizing exhibits, assembling jury instructions, and coordinating with victim/witness specialists.
  • Notifies case agents and staff of victim/witness issues and ensures adherence to Departmental guidelines on victims' rights.
  • Verifies legal citations and statutory references using Westlaw, Lexis/Nexis, and other resources; proofreads and edits legal briefs.
  • Electronically files legal documents with the U.S. District Court using the CM/ECF system and develops tables of contents and indices for briefs.
  • Composes original correspondence requiring knowledge of legal procedures and specialized terminology.
  • Scans, inputs, and links case-related materials into electronic discovery databases and manages those databases, including documents from law enforcement partners.
  • Manages discovery processing and production, including Bates-stamping, redacting, and sending continuing discovery to defense counsel using Adobe Acrobat and IPRO Eclipse.
  • Maintains electronic case files, enters data in case management systems, calendars deadlines, and prepares files for closing.
  • Performs docketing duties, tracks case filings, generates reports, and reconciles inconsistencies in case status.
  • Responds to email and telephone inquiries, referring matters to appropriate staff or AUSAs based on urgency.
  • Utilizes Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Access) and Adobe Acrobat to produce and integrate complex documents, tables, graphs, and charts.
  • Directs and supervises paralegal and contractor staff, monitors progress, performs quality control, and formulates administrative procedures.
  • Performs complex legal and factual research, designs case file tracking systems, and coordinates with expert witnesses and other support components.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree.
  • Valid state driver’s license.
  • Minimum five (5) years of professional work experience.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and document review platforms (Everlaw, Relativity).
  • Ability to make responsible decisions under pressure and adapt to unexpected developments.
  • Physically located within the general geographic commuting radius of the USAO office.
  • Experience and expertise in performing requisite legal support services.
  • Ability to deliver high-quality work under extreme pressure.
  • U.S. Citizenship and a 7 (or 10) year minimum background investigation required.
