Paralegal
About the role
The Paralegal will provide legal and administrative support to government attorneys and legal staff. Duties include conducting legal research, managing case files, preparing legal documents, and assisting with litigation, investigations, and administrative hearings.
Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive legal research involving federal and state statutes, regulations, directives, and judicial decisions
- Use government-provided legal research databases, including LexisNexis, PACER, and state judiciary resources
- Analyze and summarize case law, research findings, medical records, and factual records
- Aid attorneys in developing legal opinions, memoranda, and case strategies
- Investigate facts and gather evidence for legal cases, JAGMAN administrative or criminal investigations, and civilian personnel matters
- Create, organize, and maintain physical and electronic records for cases, investigations, and other legal matters
- Track deadlines, statutes of limitations, discovery dates, report dates, filing requirements, and suspense dates
- Notify government attorneys of pending or upcoming actions
- Develop and maintain tracking systems and databases for evidence, documents, investigations, administrative law matters, and training records
- Document drafting and preparation
- Prepare legal and administrative documents for attorney review and approval
- Assist attorneys with preparation for trials and administrative hearings
- Organize and maintain exhibits, trial notebooks, hearing notebooks, and witness files
- Review and summarize transcripts, witness testimony, discovery materials, and other evidence
- Identify and highlight key information relevant to litigation or administrative proceedings
- Administer administrative and program support
- Serve as the initial point of contact for clients and visitors
- Provide knowledgeable assistance and route inquiries to appropriate legal personnel
- Perform notary services
- Draft routine correspondence
Requirements
- Associate’s degree in Paralegal Studies or a similar field
- Bachelor’s degree and/or paralegal certificate is highly desired
- At least three years of paralegal experience
- Federal government or military legal-office experience is strongly preferred
- Administrative law experience is highly desired
- Proficiency with LexisNexis and Microsoft Office
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Must become a Virginia Notary Public within 90 days of the contract start date
- Must be a U.S. citizen and possess, or be able to obtain and maintain, a Secret security clearance
