This is a 1:1 support paraeducator position. A change in assignment and/or location may occur based on student specific needs and enrollment variances.
Schedule
- 6.5 hours per day at 168 days per year
- 3.5 hours per day at 10 days per year
- 7 hours per day for 4 days during the first year and 2 days each following year until certification is completed
Pay
PSE Salary Schedule Level 5 - $25.40 per hour
Requirements
- Must be 18 years of age
- Hold a high school diploma or its equivalent
- Meet one of the following:
- Successfully passed the ETS ParaPro test or Pearson Paraprofessional assessment
- AA degree or higher
- Earned seventy-two (72) quarter credits or forty-eight (48) semester credits at an accredited institution of higher education
- Completion of a registered apprenticeship program offered by the Washington State Dept. of Labor & Industries
- Successful completion of The Master Teacher Inc. Paraeducator Online Training Program
- Unofficial transcripts may be provided in your application; official transcripts will be required upon hire
Training
- Complete Right Response Training within 3-5 months of hire; renewal required annually
- Successfully complete the Fundamental Course of Studies (FCS) and General Paraeducator Certificate of the state-mandated Paraeducator Certificate Program (dependent on State funding)
Responsibilities
- Assist certificated staff with instructional and non-instructional activities for non-mainstreamed special education students, generally in a self-contained classroom
- Instruct students individually or in small groups to promote understanding of materials presented
- Provide encouragement, reinforcement, and support for achieving educational objectives and goals
- Assist in administering objective tests or other measurements
- Communicate with certificated staff about individual student progress and adjust methods to meet diverse student needs
- Maintain records, logs, charts, and other documentation for student progress assessment
- Attend to student physical and safety needs, including monitoring for medical risks such as seizures and harmful behaviors
- Correct behaviors and maintain discipline according to established policies and procedures
- Assist students with toileting, personal hygiene, and basic life skills (may include catheterization, diapering, feeding, and social skills)
- Provide physical assistance to students, such as lifting or positioning, and use adaptive equipment for communication
- Monitor and provide first aid as needed; maintain cleanliness and hygiene of classroom and equipment
- Prepare, modify, and distribute materials for student use and enrichment activities
- Model appropriate behavior, maintain confidentiality, and perform related duties consistent with the position
Mental Demands
- Frequent interruptions; required to handle a wide range of student behaviors and academic abilities
- May occasionally deal with distraught or difficult students
Physical Demands
- Potentially exposed to ordinary infectious diseases carried by students
- Exposed to student noise levels
- Required to lift and position students and their equipment (e.g., wheelchairs)
- May work in non-routine positions for extended periods
- May need to attend to students' personal hygiene and be exposed to biting behavior or bodily fluids
- Playground supervision may require working outdoors in inclement weather
Qualifications
- Demonstrated skill in reading, writing, and communicating
- Knowledge of basic subject areas such as reading and math
- Ability to interact with students in a warm and confident manner
- Flexibility in handling changes in assignments
- Ability to organize activities and follow instructions
- Fairness and consistency when working with students
- Ability to learn and implement effective behavior management and instructional techniques
- Knowledge of a variety of behavior and learning disorders
- Understanding of student safety rules and procedures
- Ability to learn computer and software use for instruction and record-keeping
- Ability to operate general office machines
- Strong interpersonal skills for working with students and staff
- Conflict resolution and ability to diffuse situations
- Willingness to maintain confidentiality
- Willingness to be trained in medical procedures (e.g., medication administration, tube feeding)
Licenses & Special Requirements
- Fingerprinting and background check required (no convictions involving physical molestation, abuse, injury, or neglect of a minor)
- Must complete training in and adhere to the district infection control plan
- May be required to obtain first aid and CPR certification
- Hepatitis-B immunization offered
