Paraeducator - Bridge Program at Mosher Elementary School

About the role

The Paraeducator-Bridge Program provides academic and enrichment support to individuals or small groups of elementary or middle school students in the after-school Bridge Program at an assigned site. The program aims to create a safe, fun learning environment with a focus on literacy, mathematics, enrichment, and recreation, funded by the After School Education and Safety (ASES) Proposition 49 Grant.

Responsibilities

• Work with students alone or with another staff member following ASES Grant guidelines.
• Provide homework tutoring in academic subjects, including checking for completion, reading with students, and facilitating academic games and activities using Black Line Masters for support.
• Lead students in academic enrichment activities such as art, science, traditional and nontraditional sports, drama, and dance.
• Support students during snack and attendance time at the start of the daily program.
• Supervise, observe, and manage student behavior according to Bridge Program Rules of Conduct.
• Ensure the health and safety of students by adhering to health and safety rules, fostering self-esteem, and providing emotional support and guidance.
• Interact positively with site leaders, teachers, Parks and Recreation staff, Boys and Girls Club staff, and other paraeducators.
• Work effectively with multiple grade levels throughout the program.
• Maintain a clean and orderly work area.
• Maintain daily records, submit a monthly calendar, and notify the site leader of absences.
• Participate in meetings and in-service training as required.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

Requirements

Knowledge of:

• Basic aspects of the physical and emotional care of children.
• Subjects taught in District schools, including arithmetic, grammar, spelling, language, and reading.
• Safe practices in classroom and playground activities.
• Indoor and outdoor recreational and educational activities for school-aged children.
• Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.
• Proper English usage, grammar, vocabulary, spelling, and punctuation.
• Positive behavior management techniques and discipline of children.
• Effective record-keeping practices and procedures.

Ability to:

• Tutor individual or small groups of students in various academic subjects.
• Demonstrate an understanding, patient, respectful, and receptive attitude toward students of all ages.
• Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with children and adults.
• Monitor and discipline students according to approved policies and procedures.
• Supervise and care for children with varying degrees of development and needs in different activities.
• Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action.
• Understand and follow the curriculum guide for enrichment.
• Maintain confidentiality in all matters related to students.

Qualifications

Any combination equivalent to: a high school diploma and increasingly responsible experience working with school-aged children in an organized setting.

Working Conditions:

• Outdoor and indoor recreational and classroom environments.

Physical Demands:

• Lifting heavy objects up to 25 pounds.
• Dexterity of hands and fingers to demonstrate activities and prepare materials.
• Bending at the waist, kneeling, or crouching.
• Standing and walking for up to two hours a day when necessary.
