About the Role
Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, assist a certificated teacher in reinforcing instruction to individual or small groups of limited or non-English speaking students in a classroom or other learning environment by interpreting written materials and oral lectures. Serve as an interpreter for teachers or non-English speaking parents as directed. Perform routine clerical support duties including maintaining student records and files, assisting in the preparation of instructional materials, and providing oral and written translation for students, parents, teachers, administrators, and others.
Responsibilities
- Tutor individual or small groups of students, assist in the presentation of instructional materials, and reinforce instruction following up on specific language, spelling, reading, and other subject activities as directed by the teacher.
- Monitor and oversee student drills, practices, and assignments in various subjects.
- Provide classroom support by setting up work areas, distributing and collecting materials, and conferring with teachers concerning lesson plans.
- Prepare, administer, score, and record various tests and assignments, including proficiency placement tests; maintain student records and files.
- Assist students in completing and reviewing classroom assignments, homework projects, and test results; guide and reinforce student understanding of classroom rules and procedures.
- Assist and guide students to, on, off, and from the bus; help students navigate the school campus.
- Perform clerical duties such as preparing instructional materials, typing and duplicating materials, processing forms, recording grades, and maintaining records.
- Observe and control student behavior in the classroom and during outdoor activities; report progress regarding student performance and behavior.
- Operate audio-visual, general office, and instructional classroom equipment, including copiers, laminators, computers, and assigned software.
- Read age-appropriate stories to students; assist with enhancing reading skills and pronunciation.
- Maintain a safe, orderly, and clean learning environment; ensure the health and safety of students.
- Communicate with staff, students, parents, and the public to exchange information and resolve issues or concerns.
- Translate lessons from English to a designated second language; assist in developing course of study and lesson plans.
- Attend meetings and in-service training related to bilingual curriculum or student-related issues.
- Provide oral and written translation in parent-teacher conferences, telephone calls, and other District communications with limited or non-English speaking students and parents.
- Translate notes, letters, and other materials as necessary.
- Assist with student enrollment activities as directed.
Requirements

- Operate standard office and instructional classroom equipment, including computers and assigned software.
- Perform clerical duties such as duplicating and maintaining routine records and files related to classroom activities.
- Read, interpret, and follow rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Meet schedules and time lines; provide information and assistance to students and staff.
- Be flexible to perform work within changing priorities and possess sufficient interpersonal skills to work harmoniously with staff, students, administrators, and parents.
Qualifications
- Any combination equivalent to 48 semester units of college study or an AA Degree, or passing a NCLB qualifying written examination.
- One year of experience working with children in an instructional setting using oral and written bilingual skills.
- Experience working with people of various cultures.
- Ability to speak and write in a designated second language.
- Valid Class C driver’s license and a safe driving record (for some positions).

Examination Information
To qualify for this position, you must meet the NCLB guidelines. The process includes:
- A written exam for applicants without 48+ semester units (covers English, Math, and the Ability to Assist). Study materials are available in the Human Resources department.
- A job-specific written exam for all applicants who have completed 48+ semester units or passed the NCLB exam.
- Exam dates:
- NCLB Exam (if required): August 17, 2026, at 2:00 p.m.
- Qualifying Exam (required for all applicants): August 19, 2026, at 2:00 p.m.
- Oral Exam: To be determined.
The eligibility list duration is 6 months unless extended. Applicants selected for assignments must pay for fingerprinting services and obtain Tuberculosis results prior to beginning work.
