About the role

This position assists the classroom teacher in delivering basic academic skills to students, coordinating with the teacher to align instructional efforts, and performing tasks as outlined by the Kansas State Department of Education, Wichita Public Schools, and the curriculum at the school site.

Responsibilities

  • Discuss assigned teaching areas with the classroom teacher to coordinate instructional efforts.
  • Plan, prepare, and develop teaching aids such as books, graphs, and charts to stimulate learning.
  • Present subject matter through lectures, discussions, and supervised role plays.
  • Administer and grade examinations as required.
  • Assist students individually or in groups with lesson assignments to present or reinforce learning concepts.
  • Absorb and present lessons as directed by the teacher in specific subject areas like English, mathematics, reading, writing, and social skills.
  • Work with teachers to modify activities to meet individual student needs.
  • Confer with other staff members to plan programs promoting educational, physical, and social development.
  • Observe, evaluate, and prepare reports on student progress.
  • Provide a safe and healthy environment for students and staff.
  • Perform various tasks as assigned by the principal or teacher.

Additional Duties

  • Assist with additional duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Equipment

  • May require the ability to use SMART boards and iPads in addition to basic equipment such as computers, copiers, scanners, and fax machines.

Physical And Mental Demands

  • Work in various weather conditions.
  • React immediately to emergencies for the safety and welfare of students and staff, including using physical restraint techniques.
  • Walk long distances, stand for long periods, bend, twist, stoop, climb steps, and reach overhead.
  • Lift, carry, push, and pull up to 20 pounds regularly.

  • Proficiency and literacy skills in another language (for bilingual positions).
  • Able to follow daily directions and communicate effectively with the public.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • Associate's Degree preferred.
  • At least 1 year of experience in a related field preferred.

  • Contact with personnel within the district and with customers and vendors.
  • Working under the direct supervision of the department supervisor.
  • Working with a diverse population requiring the ability to handle all situations with tact and diplomacy.
  • Maintaining a positive attitude with all customers and colleagues.
  • Providing quick, responsive customer service.

Qualification Profile
