About the role
This position assists the teacher in the education of students with cognitive, communication, social, behavioral, and/or emotional disabilities. The role involves providing instructional assistance, managing classroom routines, and supporting students' academic and adaptive behavior skills.
Responsibilities
- Supervise students in class settings as directed by the teacher
- Absorb classroom routines and procedures
- Redirect behavior, assess crisis situations, and intervene to defuse situations
- Document occurrences and provide feedback to develop positive self-esteem
- Supervise school activities on or off campus during the instructional day
- Implement student behavior plans
- Facilitate integration efforts by assisting students to and from assigned areas within the building
- Support the physical setup of the classroom for group instruction, projects, and activities
- Integrate technology into the classroom
- Collaborate with team members to improve teaching and learning
- Provide individual and/or group instruction to students, including regular education students in academic areas after initial instruction by the teacher
- Offer feedback to students and teachers
- Assist students with self-advocacy and technology use
- Model appropriate behavior for students
- Maintain confidentiality of student and staff information
- Attend and participate in staff meetings, PLCs, and parent conferences as required
- Assist with student transportation and care for student's medical needs
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the supervisor
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent
- Minimum of 48 accredited college credits (verifiable with a transcript) or pass a state-approved assessment
- Knowledge of various sign language modalities, Braille, NCI (Nonviolent Crisis Intervention), or other special skills (depending on the position)
- Pass in-service, training, or course work in first aid, symptoms of child abuse, and/or symptoms and signs of illness (depending on the position)
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent required

- Ability to communicate both verbally and written in order to communicate with others inside and outside of the organization
- Ability to communicate effectively with a Supervisor when their discretion is needed
- Ability to perform as an effective team player
- Ability to plan, organize, make decisions, and prioritize work to meet the daily demands of the building
- Exhibit a professional manner and a positive attitude
- Use good judgment to make decisions on recurring assignments
- Display a significant degree of professionalism and confidentiality
- Conform to proper standards of professional dress and appearance
- Knowledge of company's mission, purpose, goals, and the role of every employee in achieving each of them
