Para AUT-Moderate-Level II - Special Education

Gwinnett County Public Schools seeks a Paraprofessional Educator holding a valid certificate issued by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission (PSC).

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or General Education Degree (or equivalent) plus one of the following:
  • Passed the Praxis Parapro Assessment (prior to March 1, 2007) or the GACE Parapro Assessment, OR
  • 60 semester or 90 quarter hours from a PSC-approved college or university.
• Experience in a licensed child-care environment preferred.

• Act as a representative of Gwinnett County Public Schools.

Responsibilities

• Support the instructional program by assisting in supervision, care, and instruction of special-needs students in regular education classrooms, special education classrooms, and community settings.
• Implement and reinforce Individual Education Program (IEP) goals and objectives under the direction of the supervising teacher.
• Adapt classroom activities, assignments, and materials to support IEP objectives and ensure participation of all special education students.
• Administer immediate first aid and medical assistance as instructed (e.g., diapering, tube feeding, colostomy care, medication).
• Administer tests, homework, and make-up work to support classroom teachers.
• Assist medically fragile or physically disabled students with personal hygiene (e.g., feeding, brushing teeth, toileting, diapering, transferring to/from wheelchairs).
• Confer with teachers to evaluate special education student progress and implement IEP objectives.
• Implement and collect data on behavioral plans designed by IEP teams.
• Monitor students in classrooms, on field trips, in the community, lunchroom, playground, and during life enrichment activities to ensure safety.
• Perform record-keeping and support functions (e.g., data collection, student files, attendance, daily logs).
• Provide instruction to students in individual and group activities (e.g., math, science, reading, behavioral skills, daily living skills) under teacher supervision.
• Respond to emergency situations (e.g., injuries, fights, behavior problems) using crisis intervention and physical de-escalation procedures.
• Assist with monitoring duties (e.g., hallways, lunchroom, restrooms, bus duty) and ensure appropriate student conduct.
• Escort students to designated activity areas.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Physical Demands

• Stand, walk, negotiate stairs, climb ladders, and reach with hands and arms.
• Talk, hear, and manipulate tools and small items with hands.
• Lift and transport up to 50 pounds over short distances.
• Operate a motor vehicle as part of job duties.
• Specific vision requirements: close vision, distance vision, and color vision.
• Work in varying ambient temperature and humidity conditions, including overhead work and confined spaces.
• Potential exposure to electricity, heat, noise, chemicals, and solvents.
