About the Role

The Patient Service Technician (PST) is responsible for the delivery, set-up, and pick-up of DME and respiratory equipment and supplies to home care patients. The PST instructs patients on the proper use and care of equipment and serves as the primary company representative to customers, requiring a strong customer service orientation. The PST must stay aware of changes in patients' conditions and needs, communicating these concerns to appropriate staff.

Responsibilities

  • Delivery
    • Deliver, set up, and pick up DME equipment, supplemental oxygen products, and supplies to home care patients and commercial accounts within an assigned geographical area.
    • Organize and pick product, loading in the proper order for delivery.
    • Complete deliveries, new patient set-ups, and equipment returns efficiently and safely per company and regulatory guidelines.
    • Meet scheduled delivery times; call customers if unable to deliver or pick up on time.
  • Driving
    • Practice safe driving habits and proper safety precautions.
    • Work with dispatch to create efficient delivery routes.
    • Maintain good knowledge of the geographical area and road conditions.
    • Responsible for vehicle and equipment during delivery/pickup.
  • Infection Control
    • Execute proper hand-washing techniques between patients.
    • Wear gloves when exchanging disposables or handling dirty equipment.
    • Identify, handle, and dispose of hazardous materials and waste (e.g., needles, disposables).
    • Bag all dirty equipment and isolate it from clean equipment in vans and the warehouse.
  • Equipment Assembly
    • Assist with pulling equipment and supplies from the warehouse as prescribed on delivery tickets.
    • Provide skilled assembly and inspection of equipment as needed.
    • Prepare new equipment set-up packets.
  • Patient Instruction
    • Provide patient orientation and instruction on the proper use of equipment, either unsupervised or under clinical supervision.
    • Solicit sales of new or additional products or services by suggesting follow-up items relative to the patient’s diagnosis.
  • Documentation and Collections
    • Communicate financial responsibility to customers regarding copays, deductibles, or full amounts, and collect payments.
    • Deliver company patient packet including patient rights and financial responsibility.
    • Complete delivery and pickup paperwork accurately, gathering insurance information, patient signatures, and acknowledgements.
    • Return paperwork to appropriate personnel.
    • Prepare accurate, legible, and timely paperwork to comply with company and regulatory requirements (e.g., daily route sheet, work orders, driver log).
  • Customer Service
    • Serve as the primary company representative to customers.
    • Provide skillful responses to grieving, upset, or difficult customers.
    • Work proactively with patients to solve problems as a company field representative.
    • Offer compassionate and positive interactions while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Patient-Home Assessment
    • Assess home safety, accessibility, and patient status and needs; complete appropriate forms.
    • Communicate changes in patient status or environment to the company.
    • Observe and report customer needs, equipment problems, competitor actions, and ideas to improve services.
  • Emergency Preparedness and Disaster Plan
    • Maintain knowledge of basic home safety.
    • Know your role in the company’s emergency preparedness and disaster plan.
    • Follow emergency response time policies and procedures.
  • Oxygen Delivery and Safety
    • Follow all FDA, OSHA, and DOT regulations, company policies, and safety procedures.
    • Provide proper back-up oxygen and implement safety procedures.
  • On Call
    • Take on-call time on a predetermined, rotating basis.
    • Respond quickly within corporate guidelines, including problem-solving over the telephone and on-site visits if necessary.
    • Document on-call activities.
  • Cleaning and Disinfecting Equipment
    • Maintain appropriate storage of clean and dirty equipment.
    • Return dirty equipment and isolate it in the designated area until cleaned.
    • Avoid cross-traffic through clean areas with dirty equipment.
    • Clean and disinfect equipment using proper PPE.
    • Note items needing repair and follow company procedures for bagging and tagging.
    • Place items back in stock daily.
  • Vehicle Maintenance
    • Maintain company-owned vehicles in good running order.
    • Keep vehicle interior and exterior clean and professional.
    • Perform daily preventive maintenance as required.
    • Report mechanical irregularities immediately and follow through on repairs.
  • Maintenance
    • Maintain the warehouse area in a neat and orderly fashion.
    • Assist in maintenance of the entire structure as needed.
    • Maintain and water landscaping around the building.
    • Perform special maintenance and construction projects as requested.
  • Shipping and Receiving
    • Prepare products for shipping efficiently and cost-effectively.
    • Receive all shipped items daily, verify accuracy, and notify appropriate parties.
    • Unpack, note for inventory, and stock new equipment quickly.
    • Notify vendor and purchasing of damage or shortages immediately.
  • Inventory
    • Assist in maintaining proper inventory and consistent stocking of equipment and supplies.
    • Place all received items into their appropriate locations daily.
    • Perform accurate physical inventory as required, including input into the computer inventory record.
  • Rules and Regulations
    • Comply with all company policies, procedures, and patient protocols.
    • Comply with government regulations and professional standards, including those of accrediting organizations.
    • Maintain knowledge of and follow policies regarding equipment repair as outlined by FDA, OSHA, DOT, and accreditation bodies.
    • Treat all information with confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA and patient rights standards.

    • Medium physical demand, frequently lifting and carrying items up to 75 pounds.
