Panel Shop Fabricator (8-Week Project)

About the Role

As a Panel Shop Fabricator, you will work collaboratively with other fabricators to produce quality-built panels in a safe manner. You will partner with the Panel Shop Supervisor on panel layouts and wiring based on approved schematics, perform as-built mark-ups, and provide feedback to supervision and engineering as needed. The role involves reviewing vendor components against the panel BOM, adhering to wiring best practices and safety requirements, and supporting team efforts to standardize panel fabrication processes. You will document corrections, participate in training, follow proper assembly processes, and contribute to continuous improvement and optimization of panel fabrication.

Responsibilities

• Wire control panels according to electrical diagrams and schematics, including 460 V motor controls, 120 V control, and low voltage wiring.
• Lay out components such as PLCs, VFDs, and power and control devices.
• Mount panel components using power tools and hand tools.
• Perform control panel testing and PTP (point-to-point) verifications.
• Ensure panel wiring conforms to NEC, NFPA 70E, and UL 508A standards.
• Verify wiring diagrams and components match panel designs and BOM.
• Update drawings for fabrication modifications and return to engineering.
• Minimize fabrication time while maximizing panel build quality.
• Meet or exceed panel fabrication and testing time targets.
• Adhere to fabrication schedules and shipping dates.
• Participate in training processes and train others on new processes.
• Problem-solve PTP wiring verification issues.
• Read and interpret panel drawings, electrical schematics, and equipment layouts.
• Maintain 5S standards and ensure QA standards are met.
• Document any corrections or modifications with panel shop supervision.
• Support continuous improvement and optimization of panel fabrication processes.

Requirements

• Able to read and understand electrical diagrams and schematics.
• Skilled in wiring from low voltage to 480 V, including 22 ga to 500 MCM wire.
• Prior experience fabricating motor control panels.
• Capable of lifting more than 50 pounds.
• 5+ years of panel building experience.
• 5+ years of electrical installation and troubleshooting experience.
• Sufficient strength and gross motor control to operate large hand tools (e.g., drills, routers, power saws).

Skills

• Knowledge of NEC and NFPA 70E standards (experience implementing them is a plus).
• UL 508A knowledge and experience implementing the standards.
• Familiarity with production management practices is a plus.
• Experience with EtherNet/IP, Modbus RS485, Modbus TCP, and ProfiNet cabling requirements.
• Experience with PLC controls and control networks.
• Experience with sensors and 4-20 mA devices.

Work Environment

This job is performed in a manufacturing environment where temperature and noise may vary. The fabrication shop may experience temperatures ranging from 50°F to 90°F. Personal protective equipment (PPE) is required at all times on the manufacturing floor, including steel-toed shoes, safety glasses, and hearing protection.

Physical Demands

• Regularly required to talk, hear, stand, walk, bend, stoop, use hands, and reach with hands and arms.
• Frequently active, requiring kneeling, crouching, crawling, and climbing.
• Requires close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
• Sufficient strength and gross motor control to maneuver large control panels (up to 1,000 lbs. or more) using carts and lifts.
• May be required to lift up to 50 pounds.

Schedule

This is a temporary position lasting up to 8 weeks. Mandatory overtime may be required based on business needs.
