Job Summary
The Palliative Care Physician is responsible for overseeing the medical delivery of hospice inpatient services across various care settings, including hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, and hospice inpatient units. This role ensures high-quality clinical care, effective physician supervision, and strong coordination of patient-centered services in collaboration with the Medical Director and interdisciplinary teams.
What You Need To Know
- Must be a licensed Medical Doctor (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.) in the state(s) of practice, with training or experience in caring for chronically or terminally ill patients
- Maintains active DEA license
- Valid driver's license
- Strong knowledge of primary medical care principles
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively, including other physicians, facility staff, and office leadership
- Working knowledge of hospice and palliative care, with emphasis on symptom management for terminal illness
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
- (Preferred) Board certified in Hospice and Palliative Medicine
Responsibilities
- Provide ongoing education and training to inpatient facility staff in coordination with clinical leadership
- Participate in monthly leadership meetings with the Medical Director and inpatient clinical leadership
- Participate in facility committees, meetings, and collaborative initiatives as requested
- Support and advise physicians and patient care teams to ensure high-quality care delivery
- Collaborate with attending physicians regarding patient prognosis and care planning
- Oversee and coordinate patient admissions, discharges, and transitions within inpatient settings
- Ensure continuity of care and effective handoffs between care teams during inpatient stays
- Ensure accurate, timely, and complete daily clinical documentation of services provided in inpatient facilities
- Lead orientation and onboarding of inpatient facility physicians, including education on clinical responsibilities and hospice/palliative care principles
- Promote best practices in hospice and palliative care across all inpatient settings
- Conduct periodic reviews of clinical care quality delivered by inpatient physicians
- Develop and manage physician schedules to ensure:
- Adequate on-site coverage
- A 24/7 on-call rotation for inpatient physician support
- Perform other responsibilities as assigned by the Medical Director, Executive Director, or their designees
