About the role
This position is primarily responsible for overseeing and leading the paint department team. Lead is accountable for meeting paint production schedules and quality standards. This position has great emphasis on highly skilled processes and requires a high level of skills to help with troubleshooting and problem resolution. This position must also lead the team in initiatives related to safety, quality, efficiency, and continuous improvement.
Responsibilities
- Assign and oversee daily work assignments for the hourly production team to ensure schedule commitments are met.
- Review department work to verify technical accuracy and compliance with customer requirements.
- Crosstrain employees to maximize skills, flexibility, and efficiency, and provide feedback to the supervisor to maintain an accurate skills matrix.
- Manage the daily tool control process and ensure all tools and equipment are properly maintained.
- Ensure communication with engineers, maintenance, and purchasing is documented via email. Order required tools and parts through SAP as needed.
- Communicate daily with the team regarding job assignments and production priorities.
- Perform safety audits within assigned areas and complete all required daily, weekly, and monthly documentation.
- Address quality issues and ensure corrective actions are implemented with operators.
- Inspect employees’ work to confirm it meets established quality standards.
- Follow all procedures for quality lasting paint finish
- Maintain spray equipment to meet operational standards and follow the hazardous waste disposal program and the fire prevention program
- Ensure that hazardous waste that is handled is placed in proper containers
- Train other painters both in production and quality
- Retain information taught about chemicals and related items, and proper usage of the same
- Ensure cleaning, detailing, and decaling tasks are completed by instruction
- Function with a minimal amount of supervision
- Close attention to detail
- Meet standards of safety and 5S
- Promote the use and applications of Lean Manufacturing continuous improvement tools as part of the culture
- Be compliant with the rules of conduct and attendance per the company handbook
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
- Will be required to perform other duties as requested, directed, or assigned.
Requirements
- Manufacturing, automotive production line experience preferred
- Ability to read, write, comprehend, and verbally communicate simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos in English
- Ability to run dual-action sanders, grinders, and miscellaneous hand tools
- Ability to spray primers with an air paint system
Education and Experience
- Painter III
- 3-5+ years of experience in automotive paint application
- Familiar with all aspects of paint blending, repair, and application of automotive coating, as well as the proper usage of products
Physical Demands
- Regularly stand or walk
- Use hands to finger, handle or feel objects
- Reach with hands and arms
- Sometimes stoop, kneel, or crouch
- Occasionally lift and/or move up to 40#’s
- Specific vision abilities required: close vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception
- Ability to work with arms above the head
- Ability to work in noisy and dusty conditions
Work Environment
- Near moving mechanical parts
- Frequent exposure to fumes, airborne particles, and vibration
- Occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals
Pay and Benefits
- The pay scale for newly hired employees in this position at this location in California is between $28.56 - $39.19.
- This is based on meeting all of the requirements of the role.
- The base pay offered for the role may vary depending on the candidate’s job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
