Painter III

About the role

This position performs skilled work in preparing surfaces for painting and wallpapering, applying paint and finishes to equipment, furniture, buildings, and other structures, and installing and repairing ceramic tile. Performs work independently and may also supervise lower classification assigned personnel.

Responsibilities

• Work variable shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays as dictated by the event schedule.
• Prepare work area for painting by laying drop cloths; erect scaffolding; prepare surfaces using burners, scrapers, sand paper, sanding machines, dusters, sizing, putty, and tape.
• Mix and match paints, stains, lacquers, and enamels; apply paint and other finishes to interior and exterior surfaces with brush, roller, and spray equipment.
• Tape and texture drywall and hang various types of wallpaper.
• Plaster and repair plaster.
• Install and repair ceramic tile.
• Clean and maintain brushes and other equipment; clean up work area after job completion.
• Prepare estimates of material, time, and labor; keep records of material and labor; order supplies.
• Drive to sites with tools and equipment.

Requirements

• High school diploma or G.E.D.
• Four years of progressively responsible painting experience, with two years’ experience or training in ceramic tile and wallpapering.
• Valid Colorado Driver’s License and insurable under University guidelines.
• Pass a pre-employment physical exam and lift 100 lbs.

Skills

• Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing with various building constituents through manual and electronic means.
• Proficiency with addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, and other computations necessary for general maintenance tasks.
• Ability to follow detailed instructions provided both verbally and in writing.
• Ability to envision projects from inception to completion and provide a course of action for successful task accomplishment.
• Ability to make decisions under rigid time constraints and extreme pressure.
• Ability to receive direction from multiple sources and choose the most prudent path of action.
• Moderate to expert painting skills, including competency in wallpaper and ceramic tile installation.
• Knowledge of all types of painting and decorative equipment; skill in plastering preferred.

Preferred Qualifications

• Familiarity with Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) software, including WebTMA.

Working Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works in high, precarious places and in outside weather conditions. Exposure to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, and toxic or caustic chemicals is common. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. Unexpected interruptions often occur, and stress level is moderate to high.

Physical Activities

• Standing and walking for extended periods, bending, climbing, crouching, and sitting.
• Lifting, pushing, pulling, and lowering objects in excess of 100 pounds.
• Working with hand and power equipment.
• Required vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Color vision is essential.
• Must work from high ladders, scaffolding, man lifts, and catwalks.

Schedule

Monday - Friday, 5:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.

Pay

The hourly rate for the position is $25.42.
