About the role
The Painter will perform painting duties for buildings, fixtures, and equipment, including determining surface preparation needs, cleaning, sanding, patching, priming, and applying paint. The role involves setting up and breaking down scaffolding or ladders, calculating paint quantities and coats, and maintaining a safe, clean work area. The Painter must work independently or collaboratively with others, establish effective working relationships across departments, and handle physical demands such as working at heights and lifting up to 90 pounds.
Responsibilities
- Paint buildings, fixtures, and equipment.
- Determine if surfaces need sanding, patching, or priming; clean, sand, patch, and prepare areas for painting.
- Check surfaces after sanding, puttying, or patching before proceeding.
- Maintain a safe, clean, and non-disruptive work area; set up scaffolding or ladders as needed.
- Calculate paint quantities and determine the number of coats required.
- Work independently or assist other painters as assigned.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, contractors, vendors, customers, residents, and university personnel.
- Set up and break down scaffolding; work from extreme heights; lift up to 30 pounds frequently and up to 60–90 pounds occasionally.
- Perform other assigned tasks and responsibilities based on organizational needs and evolving priorities.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
- Valid driver’s license required; must obtain or have the ability to obtain a valid NC driver’s license within 60 days of hire.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of various products used in the painting trade.
- Skill in mixing paints and matching/blending colors.
- Skill in the use and care of painting tools (brushes, rollers, spray guns, putty knives, scrapers, etc.).
- Knowledge of the differences between coatings and their appropriate applications.

Pay
Anticipated hiring range: $50,000 – $54,000
Schedule
Monday–Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm; occasional overtime during heavy workloads.
