About the role

Painters perform skilled painting work in the preparation, patching, finishing, and maintaining of interior and exterior surfaces (e.g., wood, plaster, drywall, steel, concrete, and brick) on all University building structures, walls, woodwork, furniture, and equipment. Work follows recognized procedures and techniques of the painting trade using paint brushes, rollers, and/or sprayers, sandpaper, sanders, steel wool, wire brushes, and related painting tools. The Painter also practices preventive maintenance of painting tools and equipment and complies with federal regulations governing environmental protection, hazardous waste disposal, and the use of chemical substances and materials common to the painting trade.

Responsibilities

• Performs skilled painting work in the preparation, patching, finishing, and maintaining of all building structures, parking lots, walls, woodwork, furniture, and equipment.
• Prepares surfaces for painting using sandpaper, power sanders, steel wool, wire brushes, scrapers, paint removers, and chemicals; fills nail holes, cracks, or joints with putty, plaster, or other fillers.
• Patches and finishes drywall and other similar surfaces.
• Applies paints, stains, varnishes, enamel, or lacquer using paint brushes, rollers, and/or sprayers, and related tools common to the painting trade.
• Proficient with hand tools; skilled in the application of finishes (staining and spraying) to achieve high-quality results.
• Covers items with protective cloths, floors with cloths or tarpaulins, and tapes woodwork, facings, and decorative trims to prevent damage.
• Restores painting work sites to their original condition by removing scaffolding, painting cloths, tarpaulins, and masking tape; returns furniture and equipment to proper locations; sets up dismantled equipment; cleans paint splatters.
• Moves furniture/items such as desks, tables, chairs, vanities, display cases, hutches, bookshelves, and other items using furniture mover equipment in preparation for work and returns them to original locations.
• Complies with federal regulations by following policies, laws, and regulations governing environmental protection, safety, hazardous waste disposal, and the use of chemical substances and materials common to painting.
• Reads color charts and interprets drawings and sketches.
• Completes truck and shop inventories as assigned.
• Maintains an organized work area, including cleanliness, safety, and security of materials.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Valid driver’s license.
• One year of experience performing skilled painting work.

Preferred Qualifications

• Completion of a vocational, technical, or apprenticeship program in painting, coatings, or building trades.
• Experience performing painting work in a higher education, healthcare, or large institutional facilities environment.

Pay

Salary range: $33,381 - $38,389.
