Paint Technician - 1099

Full-time, on-site position in Grand Junction, CO, USA.

About the role

As a Paint Technician at West Star, you will transform aircraft with everything from standard stripes and colors to highly detailed artwork. This hands-on role is ideal for creative individuals who enjoy working with their hands and contributing to the extraordinary.

Responsibilities

• Masking and taping aircraft parts to avoid overspray
• Sanding primer
• Blowing and cleaning aircraft with thinner
• Washing the paint booth
• Applying all layers of paint, including top coat
• Laying out stripe and design schemes
• Prepping and scuffing paint for trim
• Re-masking aircraft and performing detail work
• Inspecting completed paint jobs
• Paint mixing and paint matching
• Effectively and clearly communicating (speaking, writing, reading) in English
• Performing any other job-related duties as assigned by supervisor or management

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Vo-tech school in paint or on-the-job experience is preferred but not required
• Valid driver’s license approved for airline travel and/or a valid passport is ideal
• Experience levels:
  • Tech I: 0-2 years of paint experience in aviation, auto, RV, marine, or related field (limited to no knowledge; requires close supervision)
  • Tech II: 2-4 years of experience (considerable knowledge; needs general supervision)
  • Tech III: 4-6 years of experience (full knowledge; limited supervision required; can act as a trainer or mentor)
  • Master Tech: 6+ years of experience in aviation interiors (subject matter expert with comprehensive knowledge)
• Self-motivated, flexible, and able to work in a fast-paced environment with specific deadlines
• Reliable attendance, including overtime and weekend assignments
• Reliable transportation to work daily
• Adherence to Federal Aviation Administration guidelines
• Compliance with all company and safety rules
• Maintenance of customer-oriented work habits

Physical Requirements

• Lift and carry up to 50 lbs
• Routine walking, bending, squatting, or sitting
• Work standing on ladders or scaffolds
• Pass pulmonary physical and respiratory fit test (must wear protective gear)

Mental Requirements

• Understanding and implementation of regulations (e.g., OSHA, hazmat)
• Ability to logically work with mechanical processes
• Professional collaboration with others
• Strong communication skills

Working Conditions

• Majority of work in a heated hangar or shop area
• Occasional work on the aircraft ramp
• Varied positions in and around the aircraft

Equipment Used

• Air equipment, polisher, and sander
• Stripper pump, electrostatic paint guns, pressure pots, and laser level
• Tugs, power carts, and other engine-powered equipment

Pay

The hourly rate for this position ranges between $20 - $28, with actual pay varying based on location, experience, and performance. Additional compensation includes a shift differential for alternate shifts, a semi-annual discretionary bonus, 401(k) company match, and employer contributions to a Health Savings Account (HSA).
