The New Jersey Judiciary offers a paid internship opportunity for Spring 2027 in the Atlantic/Cape May Vicinage. Interns will perform clerical, administrative, and customer service duties, gaining broad insight into the court system while treating all personnel, clients, and the public with dignity and respect.
About the Role
This position is limited to a maximum of 35 hours per week, not to exceed 944 hours in a fiscal year. Interns are generally required to work a minimum of 10 hours per week, with flexible hours between 8:30 AM and 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday, excluding State holidays.
Responsibilities
- Assist with answering phones, returning calls, and managing voicemails.
- Contact and follow up with applicants, defendants, court users, and members of the public.
- Organize and scan paper files, uploading them into an electronic filing system.
- Perform special projects, research, and analysis.
- Conduct computer-related work, including data entry and collection.
- Provide customer service and draft correspondences and memos.
- Observe client interviews, court proceedings, and community planning meetings.
- Assist staff and perform other duties as directed.
Requirements
- Unofficial college or university transcript must be included with the application.
- For Criminal-Pretrial Services and/or Probation Divisions: 30 credit hours from an accredited college or university pursuing a degree or certificate in Behavioral or Social Sciences, or a related field.
- For all other divisions: 30 credit hours from an accredited college or university pursuing a degree.
- For some positions, the ability to perform work requiring climbing, prolonged standing, stretching, bending, and reaching.
- Ability to frequently lift and carry supplies weighing 30–50 pounds and occasionally up to 75 pounds.
- Possession of a valid New Jersey driver’s license if the operation of a vehicle is necessary for essential duties.
- Authorization to work in the U.S. (U.S. citizenship is not required).
- Agreement to a thorough background check, including fingerprinting.
- Newly hired employees must establish and maintain principal residency in New Jersey within one year (exemptions may be requested for hardship or critical need).
