About the role
The Packaging Engineer position serves as a subject matter expert for the design, use, and maintenance of fissile material shipping packages and onsite storage containers. Responsibilities include design consultation, regulatory interpretation, user assistance, and package safety basis development.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the technical interface with customers and team members, e.g. CNS, NNSA, and other Nuclear Security Enterprise sites, to respond to regulatory and technical inquiries regarding the use of DOT, NRC, and NNSA containers.
- Maintain up-to-date awareness training on changes to transportation and packaging regulations and policies from NRC/NNSA/DOT guides, manuals, and orders and ensure that changes for affected packages are implemented in a timely manner.
- Provide technical review and comment of package specific procedures for loading, unloading, handling, use, storage, and maintenance of packages used to transport hazardous materials. Review and approve shop floor routings for certified containers.
- Provide technical support for: system requirements documents; new package designs or modifications to existing designs; design reviews; issue and configuration control of all design documents, procedures, and specifications; issuance, evaluation, and resolution of any design change requests, deviations and non-conformances.
- Provide technical input and review to Safety Analysis Reports for Packaging, Transportation Systems Risk Assessments and applications for renewal of Offsite Transportation Certificates, Offsite Transportation Directions, and Certificates of Compliance.
- Provide technical support for container design documentation, procurement specifications, first article evaluations, testing, and requests for quotations for new fabrication.
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering/Physical Science [Chemistry, Physics, or related] from an Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited program in the United States or designated equivalents from Canada or Mexico, the Washington Accord, or the list of substantially equivalent as documented by ABET.
- OR MS in Engineering/Physical science.
- OR PhD in Engineering/Physical science.
- Minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) requirement up to 4 years post-graduation at time of offer and confirmed by transcript. Beyond four years from graduation, engineering experience will supersede GPA as a requirement for hire.
- 3.0/4.0 minimum cumulative GPA for Bachelor degree
- 3.3 minimum cumulative GPA for Master degree
- 3.5 minimum cumulative GPA for PhD
- In addition, the applicant must meet the requirements of DOE O 426.2A (i.e., Baccalaureate in engineering or related scientific major 2 years job-related, and 1-year nuclear experience; or a DOE O 426.2A alternative).
Qualifications
- Master's degree is preferred.
- Experience in the design/fabrication/testing/certification of packages and knowledge of DOT/NNSA/NRC requirements for packaging and transportation and storage of hazardous and radioactive materials.
