AviationWX.org is seeking a detail-oriented, technically proficient individual to join our team in maintaining and enhancing real-time weather data services for Pacific City State Airport (KPFC) and other aviation weather reporting systems.

About the role

You will be responsible for the accuracy, reliability, and performance of live weather feeds, camera systems, and API endpoints that serve pilots, air traffic services, and aviation enthusiasts. This position involves close collaboration with hardware partners, open-source contributors, and airport stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor, troubleshoot, and maintain real-time weather sensors, webcams, and data pipelines at KPFC and other participating airports.
  • Ensure timely updates and low-latency delivery of wind, temperature, pressure, humidity, and other meteorological data.
  • Develop and refine backend services that ingest, process, and distribute METAR-style observations via web, API, and embeddable widgets.
  • Collaborate with open-source community to improve data accuracy, visualization, and integration with flight-planning tools.
  • Coordinate with airport authorities and equipment providers to resolve hardware or connectivity issues.
  • Document system architecture, data flows, and operational procedures for internal and public use.
  • Support the API platform, including rate limits, authentication, and developer documentation.

Requirements

  • Experience with real-time data systems, IoT devices, or environmental monitoring.
  • Proficiency in Python, JavaScript, and shell scripting.
  • Familiarity with REST APIs, JSON, and web protocols (HTTP, WebSockets).
  • Basic understanding of aviation weather (METAR, TAF, density altitude, wind components).
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and respond to incidents outside normal business hours.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

Skills

  • Linux system administration (Ubuntu/Debian preferred).
  • Database management (PostgreSQL, SQLite, or similar).
  • Version control with Git and GitHub.
  • Experience with weather APIs (NOAA, OpenWeatherMap, etc.) or aviation data sources.
  • Knowledge of network troubleshooting (ping, traceroute, firewall rules).
  • Familiarity with open-source culture and collaborative development.

Location: Remote, with occasional on-site visits to Pacific City State Airport (KPFC) or partner locations as needed.
