PA or CRNP, Staff or Senior - UPP Transplant Nephrology

Hours: Monday through Friday 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., no on-call or weekends. Location: UPMC Montefiore Hospital, with potential for travel to other sites for outreach clinics.

About the Role

Our Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) in the Transplant Department play a vital role in delivering comprehensive, patient-centered care across both inpatient and outpatient settings. The team relies heavily on the expertise and clinical judgment of APPs to provide bedside care, coordinate transitions of care, triage patient calls, and facilitate timely referrals to appropriate specialists and providers.

Our department has maintained an exceptionally low turnover rate for APPs, reflecting strong engagement, stability, and job satisfaction. This stability allows us to retain experienced staff, preserve institutional knowledge, and provide reliable, high-quality care to patients while supporting colleagues. Responsibilities

  • Applies basic professional practice knowledge and skills appropriate for the practice setting.

Requirements

  • Ability to establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with executives, managers, physicians, non-physician providers, ancillary and support staff, other departments, and patients/families.
  • Ability to work productively and effectively within a complex environment, handling multiple/changing priorities and specialized equipment.
  • Critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving abilities related to patient care.
  • Good clinical judgment and critical thinking skills to lead others in applying acceptable standards of practice.
  • Mobility and visual manual dexterity.
  • Physical stamina for frequent walking, standing, lifting, and positioning of patients.

Qualifications

Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner (CRNP):

  • Successful completion of an approved nurse practitioner program.
  • BSN or MSN preferred.
  • Professional nursing experience and/or nurse practitioner experience preferred.
  • Current state RN license and CRNP certification required.
  • National certification, eligible for licensure by Pennsylvania Board of Nursing, and eligible for certification as a CRNP by Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing.
  • Current CPR certification required.
  • Act 33, Act 73, and Act 34 clearances required.

Physician Assistant (PA):

  • Graduate of a physician assistant program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA).
  • BS or MS preferred.
  • Experience as a physician assistant and/or in a clinical setting preferred.
  • Current state PA license certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) required.
  • Current CPR certification required.
  • Act 33, Act 73, and Act 34 clearances required.

Senior Level:

  • Minimum 3 years of experience or completion of a post-graduate residency.
  • Successful completion of an approved Nurse Practitioner program or a graduate of a physician assistant program accredited by ARC-PA.
  • BSN or MSN preferred for CRNP; BS or MS preferred for PA.
  • National certification required.
  • Must achieve a Solid/Strong/Good performance rating or higher on annual evaluation for consideration and to maintain status.
  • Completion of an OAPP-approved professional contribution within one year of hire or promotion; department chair approval required for promotion.
  • ACLS, ITLS, NALS, PALS, or other certifications meeting AHA standards (including didactic and skills components) within 30 days of hire.
  • For outpatient or non-inpatient settings, APPs may use a business unit-approved certification relevant to the practice setting.
