Microsoft Fabric – A Next-Gen Analytics Platform
Microsoft Fabric is a unification of multiple products (Azure Data Factory + Synapse + Power BI) into a single, end-to-end analytics platform with a consistent UX. While it introduces many new capabilities, Fabric is designed to avoid overwhelming users by tailoring experiences for different personas. As a Power BI developer or analyst, you’ll primarily use the "Power BI" experience, which functions like Power BI Premium today.
Fabric presents opportunities to explore new areas like data science, Lakehouse architecture, and real-time analytics—but there’s no rush. If you don’t have time to dive in now, Fabric isn’t going anywhere.
Key Power BI-Related Announcements
- Default datasets: New datasets created by datamarts, data warehouses, or lakehouses to simplify exploration in Power BI reports, using Direct Lake.
- Real-time reporting: Enabled via KQL querysets and Eventstreams with Direct Lake.
- Write-back-like support: Changes written to OneLake (e.g., via Symantic Link) are immediately reflected in Power BI, effectively enabling writeback functionality.
- Tenant settings API: Allows retrieval of tenant settings in Fabric.
- Copilot Plugins: Custom AI-driven data consumption experiences for Copilot, with significant potential for visual activation.
