Overnight Emergency & Critical Care Veterinary Technician

About the role

The Emergency and Critical Care Veterinary Technician II position at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University is an essential employee who provides high-quality patient care, teaches veterinary and technician students, and participates in research. This position offers a $2,000 sign-on bonus after 6 months of employment.

Responsibilities

• Provide high quality patient care including monitoring, managing, and implementing treatment plans.
• Aid clinicians with procedures and collaborate with administrative and clinical care team members.
• Complete diagnostic testing as ordered by clinicians, including bench-top lab tests.
• Instruct veterinary students and student technicians in all technical aspects of patient care.
• Train, orient, and mentor new Veterinary Technicians in all aspects of the department.
• Contribute to academic and clinical research, including treating research/laboratory animals.
• Maintain adequate inventory of medical supplies and pharmaceuticals.
• Clean and maintain clinical areas including nurses’ stations, wards, intensive care unit, and emergency room.
• Perform miscellaneous duties as assigned by supervisor and assistant supervisor, such as coverage for other sections of the hospital and participation in service and hospital-wide initiatives.
• Communicate effectively with clients to provide education, explain treatment plans, and review discharge instructions, including medication administration.

Requirements

• Basic requirements include a high school diploma or equivalent, associate's or bachelor's degree in veterinary technology, veterinary nursing, or veterinary science, and 3+ years of experience as a veterinary technician in a fast-paced hospital, with one year at a university hospital or large-scale hospital.
• Preferred qualifications include a bachelor's degree in veterinary technology, four or more years of ECC veterinary medicine experience, exotic animal handling skills, certification as a Certified Veterinary Technician, fear-free certified, rescue basic life support and advanced life support certified, and familiarity with point-of-care machines.

Qualifications

• Demonstrated ability to work independently and under supervision.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• Comprehensive understanding of medical terminology and veterinary pharmacology.
• Knowledge of electronic medical record systems and other software systems used.
• Safely restrain cats and dogs, assess the attitude and responsiveness of dogs and cats, obtain vital signs, identify animals in pain or distress, perform IV catheterization, phlebotomy, dosage calculations, set up fluid therapy systems, monitor physiological parameters, assist in CPR, and lift up to 50 lbs.

Pay

The pay range for this position is $27.85 minimum, $33.15 midpoint, and $38.50 maximum. Salary is based on related experience, expertise, and internal equity; generally, new hires can expect pay between the minimum and midpoint of the range.
