Outside Plant Engineer - Elko, NV

Responsibilities

• Responsible for all network field activity on Cogent’s network.
• Work independently on complex projects typically spanning a 4–11 state area.
• Assess planned excavation/construction activities by non-Cogent agencies/organizations/companies for conflicts with Cogent’s fiber cable.
• Negotiate changes in excavation/construction activities to remove conflicts with Cogent’s fiber optics cable.
• Analyze and prepare cost-effective OSP work orders including cost estimates, scope of work, specifications, and bid packages.
• Supervise the engineering/construction activities of contract engineering and construction personnel to ensure safety and compliance with Cogent construction standards.
• Coordinate engineering/construction activities with operations support systems, Real Estate, Contracts, and other entities.
• Maintain the permanent as-built drawings of the fiber routes in the area of responsibility and coordinate changes with the CPR and Drafting groups.
• Coordinate with Access Management the telecommunications entrance to Cogent buildings by other communications companies.
• Interface with federal, state, county, and city governments for project permitting and approvals.
• Typically manage 3–5 projects per month costing $500K to $5M each.
• Provide guidance, coordination, and direction to lower-level OSP Engineers on projects as required.
• As required, accurately locate Cogent cable and respond to emergency situations involving the cable.
• Serve as team leader on major OSP construction/relocation projects and reimbursable jobs.
• Review construction plans and standards of vendors performing OSP construction for Cogent.

Qualifications

• BS/BA (Civil Engineering preferred) or equivalent experience plus 1–5 years of experience in outside plant engineering and construction.
• 1–5 years of experience must be in direct management of construction or engineering projects.
• Working knowledge of Cogent cable construction standards.
• Excellent interpersonal and negotiating skills.

Additional Desired Qualifications

• Project management experience.
• Basic knowledge of CAD systems, GIS, and GPS field survey tools.
• Experience maintaining a fiber network.

Pay

Starting base salary range: $80,000 – $110,000. Specific offers within the listed pay ranges are determined by factors such as experience, education, skills, certifications, and business needs.

Schedule

This is an in-office position five days a week to best support success, allowing for focused mentorship, training, and personal coaching.
