Outside Plant Engineer

As an Outside Plant Engineer, you will manage a variety of internal and external partners and vendors to oversee OSP/ISP construction and maintenance of network extension projects to deliver fiber to new and existing customers. Your vital role will ensure that these multi-stakeholder, complex projects are delivered on time, to specifications, and within budget.

Responsibilities

  • Manage all engineering and construction activities of assigned projects associated with expanding and maintaining the OSP network infrastructure.
  • Lead engineering efforts on multiple projects, driving productivity through use of vendor resources to meet deliverables.
  • Engage appropriate internal and external organizations and individuals with good written/verbal communications to accomplish required tasks with focus on quality and speed to market.
  • Coordinate project activities with contractors, developers, municipalities, and consultants.
  • Propose solutions supported by sound engineering and operational productivity to achieve goals in creative and effective ways.
  • Analyze implications of changes from the original schedule and take required corrective actions to ensure the project stays on track.
  • Recognize vulnerabilities in network infrastructure and make intelligent decisions to ensure reliability within financial constraints.
  • Prepare detailed cost analysis, project specifications, spend forecasts, route mapping, requisitions, and business justifications.
  • Process reports, vendor invoices, material receipts, and other administrative duties.
  • Perform field meetings, inspection of construction in progress, and quality control of final product to ensure company requirements are met.
  • Communicate project status and progress to team members and customers.
  • Respond immediately to network outages, coordinating necessary resources and activities for prompt and appropriate restoral.
  • Design routes: Create maps for fiber optic cable paths.
  • Manage permits: Work with local cities, towns, and departments of transportation to secure rights-of-way permits.
  • Coordinate with vendors, utility providers, and local government agencies.
  • Estimate costs: Build budgets, material lists, and project timelines.
  • Oversee construction: Direct contractors and check field work for quality.
  • Respond to network outages addressing fiber damage for network restoration.
  • Document systems: Manage and update records using systems such as Fiber-X and Canvas.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree or two or more years of work experience.
  • Three or more years of relevant experience required, demonstrated through work experience and/or military experience.
  • Willingness to travel up to approximately 25% of the time.
  • Valid Driver's license.

Qualifications

Even better if you have one or more of the following:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or technical/science/mathematics fields.
  • Experience in CAD, 3GIS, ARCGIS, Google Earth, or other mapping and drafting software.
  • Experience in Google Workspace or Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Experience with Verizon applications such as ERP, nSAP, CoE/Canvas, 3GIS, Fiber-X, FIAT, and VPM.
  • Corporate data and reporting platforms (Google Sheets, Excel, Tableau, Cheetah, or others).
  • Experience with pole attachment and make-ready processes.
  • Experience with AI tools to automate repetitive tasks (Gemini, NotebookLM, Claude).

Schedule

  • Scheduled weekly hours: 40.
  • In this hybrid role, you'll have a defined work location that includes working from home and a minimum of three days per week in the office, which will be set by your manager.

Pay

The salary will vary depending on your location and confirmed job-related skills and experience. This is an incentive-based position with the potential to earn more. For part-time roles, your compensation will be adjusted to reflect your hours.
