Outreach Coordinator (Edward Byrne Center)

PAL Inc. and The New York City Police Department work in partnership to provide communities with summer and after-school recreational and educational activities through the Police Athletic League (PAL), the largest independent youth organization in New York City.

About the role

The Outreach Coordinator will lead efforts in recruiting and engaging youth in Beacon programs and activities, providing them with services tailored to their needs, strengths, interests, and challenges. Under the direction of the Beacon Director, this role focuses on recruiting and retaining hard-to-reach youth and young adults through community partnerships, mentorship, and wraparound support services.

Responsibilities

• Plan and execute extensive outreach efforts to chronically absent and/or disconnected youth through community outreach, local schools, faith-based and community-based organizations, human service providers, and other community stakeholders.
• Build relationships with local community groups, churches, schools, public housing resident associations, parent groups, and nonprofits to support diverse and innovative recruitment of participants, including at-risk, out-of-school, and court-involved youth.
• Conduct street work and street outreach to promote the visibility and accessibility of the PAL Beacon beyond the school campus.
• Coordinate with the Leadership team to ensure appropriate referrals and linkages for participants to co-located and referral-based wraparound services.
• Provide mentorship to youth to encourage program and school attendance.
• Maintain effective working relationships with program managers and staff involved in service planning and provision.
• Ensure professional communication and guidance from program staff to youth participants.
• Submit reports to the Beacon Director and/or PAL management as required.
• Attend ongoing training and professional development activities identified by the Beacon Director and/or PAL management.
• Organize and/or participate in external special events to promote PAL’s mission and image, cultivate relationships, and generate support.
• Convene meetings with Beacon staff, volunteers, participants, parents, community partners, and other stakeholders to assist in program delivery and policy communication.
• Maintain records of all data collected.
• Perform other relevant duties as delegated by the Program Director.

Requirements

• High school diploma required; Associate’s degree or higher in a relevant human services field preferred.
• Knowledge of and history with the Far Rockaway community required; bilingual preferred.
• 1-2 years of street outreach, youth development, or other relevant experience required.
• Demonstrated skills in culturally relevant approaches and youth development.
• Non-judgmental approach and ability to empathize with others.
• Experience establishing and maintaining community partnerships.
• Experience working in an ethnically, culturally, and racially diverse environment.
• Ability to collaborate as part of a team.
• Leadership skills in conflict intervention, negotiation, decision-making, and delegation.
• Dynamic energy, ability to multi-task, and manage multiple requests.
• Commitment to working toward positive community change.
• Strong oral and written communication skills; ability to speak persuasively to staff, members, parents, groups, and community residents.
• Ability to work evenings, early mornings, and/or weekend hours as required periodically.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.

Pay

$20.00 per hour.
