About the role

The Outreach Coordinator is responsible for planning, coordinating, implementing, and evaluating community-based strategies that promote HIV/STI/HCV testing and prevention. Ensures outreach efforts align with client-centered, sex-positive, and wellness-based approaches to sexual health, emphasizing pleasure, empowerment, and accessibility. Oversees outreach events and advises on social media engagement and strategic partnerships. Collaborates with internal teams, advisory groups, and external stakeholders to develop inclusive and impactful outreach initiatives. Supervises and provides direct support to the Outreach Specialist/Assistant, ensuring outreach goals and contractual deliverables are met.

Responsibilities

  • Outreach Strategy & Event Coordination
    • Develop and implement an annual outreach plan with clear goals, benchmarks, and evaluation metrics to measure impact.
    • Coordinate and execute community-based, venue-based, and digital outreach efforts aligned with harm reduction and sex-positive approaches.
    • Plan and manage special events at key gathering places, LGBTQ+ spaces, nightlife venues, and high-impact community locations to normalize HIV/STI/HCV testing and treatment.
    • Advise on social media and app-based outreach in collaboration with the Communications Department.
    • Utilize digital platforms to engage priority populations and increase access to testing services.
    • Partner with GMHC consumers, advisory groups, and external stakeholders to review previous outreach efforts and develop innovative strategies.
    • Collaborate with internal teams to ensure outreach messaging is inclusive, culturally competent, and accessible to diverse communities.
  • Supervision & Program Oversight
    • Provide direct supervision, guidance, and mentorship to the Outreach Specialist/Assistant.
    • Ensure outreach efforts are effectively coordinated and executed.
    • Manage outreach deliverables and track progress toward contractual goals and program benchmarks.
    • Oversee and maintain detailed records and reports of outreach activities in compliance with program and funding requirements.
    • Collaborate with the Senior Director of Testing and Prevention Services to develop and manage the outreach budget.
    • Establish, strengthen, and maintain formal partnerships with community organizations to expand outreach impact and engagement.
  • Client Engagement & Support
    • Provide HIV counseling and testing, as needed, in accordance with Article 27-F of the NYS Public Health Law.
    • Provide pre- and post-test STI counseling for syphilis, hepatitis C, gonorrhea, and chlamydia, when required.
    • Ensure seamless linkage to care for individuals who test positive for HIV, STIs, or HCV.
    • Support clients with navigation to appropriate treatment and care services.
  • Compliance, Training & Professional Development
    • Attend and actively contribute to triad and continuous quality improvement (CQI) meetings to enhance service delivery.
    • Participate in GMHC-U training sessions and other professional development opportunities identified by supervisory staff.
    • Ensure all outreach activities comply with organizational policies, regulatory requirements, and applicable public health best practices.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required; Bachelor’s Degree preferred in Public Health, Social Work, Communications, or a related field.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in HIV prevention services, community outreach, health education, or related fields.
  • Experience supervising staff, volunteers, or outreach teams.
  • Strong knowledge of HIV, STIs, PrEP/PEP, harm reduction, and sex-positive health strategies.
  • Ability to work late afternoons, evenings, and weekends, as required by outreach activities.
  • Spanish bilingual highly preferred.
  • Certificate of attendance for PrEP/nPEP training and/or Phlebotomy Certification.
  • Experience conducting HIV/STI counseling and testing.
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed care and LGBTQ+ health disparities.
  • Experience working with mobile testing units, nightlife outreach, or digital health engagement.

Skills

  • Technical Skills
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including:
      • Microsoft Word: Creating reports, outreach documentation, and correspondence.
      • Microsoft Excel: Tracking outreach metrics, managing program deliverables, and analyzing data.
      • Microsoft Outlook: Managing email communications, scheduling, and calendar coordination.
    • Experience using electronic data tracking systems for outreach and testing services.
    • Strong data entry skills, ensuring accuracy, efficiency, and compliance across multiple reporting platforms.
    • Familiarity with social media and app-based outreach strategies to effectively engage priority populations.
  • Physical Demands
    • Routine sitting, standing, and engaging in client counseling sessions.
    • Performing venipuncture and finger-stick procedures, requiring fine motor skills and manual dexterity.
    • Occasionally lifting testing kits, medical supplies, or outreach materials weighing up to 25 lbs.

Work Environment & Schedule

  • This position requires on-site work at the designated office location and adherence to the assigned schedule.
  • On-site presence during scheduled work hours is mandatory.
  • Responsibilities include both in-person and virtual collaboration with colleagues, supervisors, and clients.
  • Must comply with workplace policies, health, and safety regulations at all times.
  • Availability for late afternoons, evenings, and occasional weekend hours is required.
  • Participation in the annual AIDS Walk New York event is mandatory for all GMHC staff.

Pay

$60,000-65,000 (DOE)
