Outpatient Surgery Coder- FULLY REMOTE

This is a fully remote, contract-to-hire position based in Chesapeake, VA. Candidates must reside in one of the approved states: VA, TX, FL, or NC.

About the role

The Coding Specialist - Outpatient Surgery Coder is responsible for accurately assigning and sequencing ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS codes for outpatient surgery, observation, and ancillary encounters. This individual will work within Epic work queues, reviewing operative reports and clinical documentation to ensure compliant and accurate facility coding.

Responsibilities

• Code ambulatory surgery and observation encounters
• Review operative reports and assign appropriate CPT, ICD-10, and HCPCS codes
• Abstract clinical and demographic data into hospital systems
• Ensure coding compliance with CMS, Medicare, Medicaid, and AHIMA/AAPC standards
• Select APC assignments and validate claim readiness
• Collaborate with physicians and clinical staff to obtain clarification when needed
• Support emergency department and outpatient diagnostics coding as volume dictates
• Maintain departmental productivity and quality standards

Requirements

• 4+ years of outpatient medical coding experience
• Surgical medical coding experience
• One of the following credentials: CCS, CPC, COC, RHIA, RHIT
• Successful completion of a coding certificate program with AHIMA approval status is preferred

Preferred Qualifications

• Epic experience
• Emergency Department coding experience
• Outpatient diagnostics coding experience
• Experience cross-covering multiple outpatient work queues
• Broad procedural coding background across multiple specialties

Pay

The pay range for this position is $29.00 - $33.00 per hour.
