This Pharmacist 2 position is an integral member of the healthcare team, fostering excellent interdepartmental relationships and providing quality, cost-effective pharmaceutical care to all patients.

About the Department

UC Davis Health is a nationally recognized leader in high-quality, patient-centered care, based in the Greater Sacramento area of Northern California. The Department of Pharmacy is a dynamic, critical part of patient care, with over 600 professional, technical, and administrative personnel. We focus on patient-centered medication management to optimize outcomes through practice, education, research, and leadership across the continuum of care.

The department offers comprehensive pharmaceutical services 24/7, including inpatient and outpatient services, clinical pharmacists embedded in clinics, three inpatient pharmacies, five outpatient pharmacies, two infusion pharmacies, a home infusion service, and full pharmacy purchasing, stores, and distribution. UC Davis Health also hosts the largest pharmacy residency program in the country, with 46 residents across 13 programs.

UCDH Outpatient pharmacies emphasize patient care in Hospital Discharge, Oncology, Infectious Diseases, Ambulatory Care, Employee Health, and Specialty Pharmacy. Staff are responsible for screening prescriptions, preparing medications, providing immunizations, and offering patient consultations while ensuring compliance with multiple accrediting bodies and state/federal laws.

Responsibilities

  • Provides vaccines, injectables, and clinical pharmacy services (50%)
  • Participates in medication distribution and dispensing services (30%)
  • Engages in administrative tasks, quality improvement, and program development (10%)
  • Supports medication access, patient outreach, and care coordination (10%)
  • Screens prescriptions for appropriateness and makes clinical interventions
  • Provides drug information, recommendations, and patient consultations
  • Manages drug dispensing, distribution, and compounding activities
  • Maintains pharmacy robotics and inventory management
  • Processes prescription billing and payments for multiple payers, including third-party insurances, Medicaid, Medicare D, and Medicare B
  • Serves as a preceptor to pharmacy students and residents
  • Provides training to other personnel
  • Ensures compliance with California Pharmacy Law and federal regulations (e.g., DEA)

Requirements

  • Doctor of Pharmacy Degree (PharmD) from an accredited college or university, or equivalent training
  • Valid California Pharmacist License (eligible at time of application, must possess at time of hire)
  • Immunization Certification
  • American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification, or UC Davis Health CPR
  • Two years of recent licensed pharmacist experience in an outpatient or retail pharmacy setting
  • Experience performing QA and order verification
  • Patient counseling experience
  • Customer service experience
  • Working knowledge of Medi-Cal Formulary and other third-party billing systems
  • Ability to accurately perform pharmacy calculations
  • Ability to interpret physicians’ orders, pharmacy, and nursing records
  • Current knowledge of pharmacy terminology, generic/brand names, and hospital formulary drugs
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English
  • Ability to independently exercise delegated authority and seek assistance when needed

Preferred Qualifications

  • Epic experience
  • Experience working in a Hospital Outpatient Pharmacy
  • Ability to supervise technicians and establish workflow priorities
  • Computer skills for medication order entry and clinical software programs

Pay

Hourly salary range: $93.91 - $105.78

Schedule

Full-time (100%), Monday through Friday, 8:45 AM to 5:15 PM. Occasional overtime, weekends, rotating holidays, evenings, or nights may be required due to staffing shortages, computer failures, or high-volume dispensing periods.
