Outpatient Sonographer - Radiology

About the role

The Outpatient Sonographer delivers quality patient care and performs scans in compliance with regulatory and department processes. This role operates in an ancillary outpatient radiology setting, performing specialty sonograms while ensuring safety, accuracy, and adherence to standards.

Responsibilities

• Verifies two forms of patient identification on “Every Patient / Every Time” to ensure correct procedures are performed.
• Completes all required documentation (e.g., patient history, pregnancy, procedural consent, safety portal, medication reconciliation, PACS).
• Ensures accurate and complete charges for procedures and supplies used.
• Reviews exam orders from medical charts and prescriptions prior to performing exams.
• Performs procedure protocols and produces images consistent with quality standards, adhering to Federal, State, and ACR regulations.
• Collaborates with supervising Radiologist(s) on imaging protocols, quality assurance, and communication of acute clinical findings.
• Properly positions patients and administers medications within scope of practice as prescribed.
• Maintains outpatient-level productivity and pace as determined by leadership.
• Practices aseptic and sterile techniques per Infection Control guidelines.
• Ensures equipment is clean, disinfected, and reported if malfunctioning.
• Maintains clean, stocked, and disinfected exam rooms.

Requirements

• Graduate of a Radiologic Technology or Sonography program.
• Registered by ARRT or ARDMS.
• Must hold or obtain within two (2) years of becoming registry eligible:
  • RDMS (AB) (OB/GYN), or
  • ARRT (S).
• American Heart Association Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider certification (required prior to start date).
• Prior sonography work experience preferred.

• Basic computer skills (MS Office – Outlook and Word).
• Excellent communication in an active team environment.
• Ability to assess and interpret data.
• Clear communication with patients, families, and physicians at various levels of understanding.
• Flexibility to work evening/weekend shifts as needed.

Physical Requirements

• Moderate physical agility; frequent walking, standing, bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing, or crouching.
• Medium work involving lifting or moving objects up to 50 pounds occasionally, with or without assistance.
• Ability to move in various positions (e.g., reaching overhead, tight spaces).
• May lift, turn, pull, push, or ambulate people/equipment up to 90% of the shift.
• Exposure to varied environments (temperature, air quality, lighting, noise).
• May work with biohazards (blood/body fluids, airborne particles) following OSHA and CDC guidelines.
• Visual acuity and hand-eye coordination for task performance.
• Workspace may vary from open to confined.
• May require travel to facilities within and beyond county perimeter; personal vehicle may be needed.
