Outpatient Phlebotomist

Full-time position requiring flexibility to work between 7:00 AM and 5:30 PM, Monday through Friday, with a 1-hour lunch break. Rotating Saturday shifts every 3 weeks from 7:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Hours range from 32 to 40 per week.

About the role

Performs phlebotomy, specimen receipt, processing, specimen distribution, computer order entry and/or requisition completion, and other pre-analytical tasks as required. Tracks specimens through appropriate computer functions when available, to ensure that all specimens are routed accurately and in a timely manner. Assures complete and accurate patient samples, patient demographics, and diagnosis codes are provided, and submits to the laboratory for testing.

Responsibilities

• Performs successful sample collection including venipuncture blood draw, capillary puncture, infant heel sticks, and urine collection utilizing proper patient identification and customer service skills.
• Understands laboratory requisitions and locates missing or incomplete information.
• Completes specimen handling and processing including centrifugation of vacutainer and aliquoting/pouring over of specimens.
• Completes follow-up tasks as needed.
• Maintains minimum supply levels and cleanliness of workstation and section.
• Registers outpatients in the hospital electronic medical record system (EPIC) and determines preliminary patient or insurance payment obligation.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Completion of phlebotomy, medical assistant, or patient care technician training.
• Previous phlebotomy experience preferred if formal training and certification as a phlebotomist is not obtained.
• Reliable transportation and willingness to travel to all Clinical Lab Locations: Ann Arbor, Brighton, Canton, Milan, Plymouth, Ypsilanti.
• Must be able to maintain a consistent schedule and fulfill mandatory full-time training for 8 weeks minimum, Monday-Friday during normal business hours.

Pay

Minimum rate of pay: $17.46 per hour.
