Responsibilities

• Support FMCNA's mission, vision, core values, and customer service philosophy while adhering to the FMCNA Compliance Program and all regulatory and policy requirements.
• Function as part of the hemodialysis healthcare team to provide safe and effective dialysis therapy under the direct supervision of a registered nurse.
• Participate in the implementation and evaluation of patient care, reporting and documenting all new or unusual incidents, complaints, or problems to the supervisor.
• Promote and assist in maintaining a safe and clean work environment.

Duties

Customer Service

• Drive the FMCNA culture through values and customer service standards.
• Provide outstanding customer service to all external and internal customers.
• Develop and maintain effective relationships through timely communication.
• Take initiative to respond, resolve, and follow up on customer service issues promptly.

Patient-Related

• Provide direct patient care for assigned patients, performing all technical aspects of dialysis procedures as prescribed.
• Administer and monitor treatments according to the current treatment plan or supervisor’s direction.
• Monitor and document dialysis treatment parameters on flow sheets and other patient-related information in individual records.
• Report significant information, changes in patient condition, or equipment problems to the supervisor.
• Assist in developing and implementing a teaching plan to educate patients and families about end-stage renal disease, dialysis therapy, diet, and medications.
• Administer intravenous medication in accordance with physician orders and state nurse practice laws.
• Perform and document pre, interim, and post-treatment reviews of patient condition.
• Initiate basic CPR measures and respond to emergency situations related to dialysis treatment.

Technical

• Safely operate all dialysis-related equipment and provide minor troubleshooting.
• Ensure a clean, safe, and sanitary environment in the dialysis facility treatment area.
• Address all blood spills immediately according to FMCNA Bloodborne Pathogen Control Policies.
• Operate all emergency equipment effectively according to standard operating procedures.

Staff-Related

• Participate in staff meetings as scheduled.
• Assist in short-term and long-term patient care plan meetings.
• Acquire knowledge in current dialysis practices by participating in scheduled in-service classes.
• Act as a resource person for other staff members.
• Assist with coordinating the care plan with physicians, dietitians, and social workers.

Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Graduate of an accredited School of Practical Nursing (LPN, LVN).
• Current appropriate State licensure.
• One year of medical-surgical nursing experience preferred; hemodialysis or ICU experience preferred but not required.
• Successful completion of a training course in the theory and practice of hemodialysis.
• CPR Certification.
• Completion of the Nurses Technical Training Program upon hire or soon thereafter.
• Ability to provide coverage at area facilities during times of short-staffing or as required.
• Must meet the necessary requirements of Ishihara's Color Blindness test as a condition of employment.
• Good communication skills, both verbal and written.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

• Day-to-day work includes desk and personal computer tasks, as well as interaction with patients, staff, and physicians.
• Provides direct patient care involving heavy lifting, moving patients, and assisting with ambulation; coworkers or equipment aids may assist.
• Requires frequent, prolonged periods of standing and bending over.
• May occasionally move machines and equipment weighing up to 200 lbs. with assistance, and lift chemical water solutions of up to 30 lbs. as high as 5 feet.
• Requires travel between assigned facilities and various community locations; travel to regional, business unit, and corporate meetings may be required.
• Work environment is characteristic of a healthcare facility with controlled air temperature and moderate noise levels.
• May be exposed to infectious and contagious diseases/materials.
