Outbound Inspector

Job Summary

The Outbound Inspector is responsible for inspecting completed rail cars for accuracy and compliance with industry, regulatory, and client standards. Key responsibilities include auditing shop work orders, reviewing customer estimates, and ensuring that all repairs and modifications meet specified requirements.

Job Duties

• Ensure rail cars are inspected for compliance with AAR/FRA, customer, and VLS requirements.
• Review and analyze work orders and customer estimate sheets to identify necessary repairs or modifications.
• Audit completed work to confirm that repairs and modifications meet specified requirements.
• Read and interpret Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
• Operate VLS estimating system (Digital Rail) and other inspection software.
• Perform visual inspections and report findings on applicable forms.
• Collaborate with maintenance and operations teams to address findings.
• Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives within the operation.
• Maintain a safe and organized workspace.

Basic Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Minimum of 3-5 years of rail car inspection experience.
• Familiarity with AAR/FRA requirements and customer specifications.
• Knowledge of mechanical systems and ability to identify potential issues or safety hazards.
• Ability to achieve Visual Testing Level II within specified timeframe.
• Proficiency in reading and understanding basic drawings and scope of work.
• Basic math skills, including addition and subtraction.
• Ability to communicate findings and collaborate with teams.
• Experience with inspection software, data entry, and report generation.
• Pass a physical, drug screen, and background check.
• Flexible to work M-F 6:30am-4:00pm and overtime as needed.
• Ability to work in various elements indoors and outdoors.

Preferred Requirements

• Completion of vocational or technical courses related to mechanical systems, railway engineering, or related fields.
• AWS Certified welding inspector or similar certification.
