About the Role

Teaching students to take care of their minds and their bodies builds a foundation for lifelong learning and ensures they have the skills needed to be physically, mentally, socially, and emotionally healthy. New York City Public Schools’ Office of School Wellness Programs (OSWP) supports school communities in building strong structures and rich environments where health and physical education (PE) thrive, and guides schools in teaching nearly one million students what they need to know to make healthy, informed choices now and throughout their lives.

Vaping is a serious health threat for students, with many high school and middle school students having tried e-cigarettes at least once. To address this, New York City Public Schools (NYCPS) has a plan focused on prevention and intervention through education for students, families, and school communities. The Health Education Research and Curriculum Coordinator will serve as the lead project manager for a multi-phase K-12 health education curriculum review and selection process, as part of NYCPS’s vaping prevention and intervention initiative. This will include engaging a wide range of stakeholders to review and provide feedback, with an initial focus on substance use and vaping prevention lessons. The Consultant will work closely with OSWP’s Health Education team to develop a detailed project plan, conduct an inventory of existing resources, and lead stakeholders through the review and recommendation process, in alignment with curriculum procurement protocols.

Responsibilities

• Develop and manage a project plan for a comprehensive health education curriculum review, with an initial focus on substance use prevention (including vaping prevention)
• Inventory and research vaping prevention resources on a local, state, and national level
• Facilitate planning conversations, curriculum review trainings for stakeholders, and debrief meetings
• Maintain records for each phase of the process, including tracking and following up with reviewers as needed
• Document key decision points and learnings throughout the project

Requirements

• Demonstrated success in managing a large, multi-phase project, including establishing timelines, organizing resources, interpreting needs, and identifying key decision points
• Familiar with key curriculum review tools, including the National Health Education Standards, NYS Culturally Responsive-Sustaining Education Framework, and Health Education Curriculum Analysis Tool (HECAT)
• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, and to maintain positive feedback channels with stakeholders
• Ability to proactively identify key issues and risks and provide informed recommendations
• Highly organized and detail-oriented
• Welcomes feedback and can adapt to new ideas and priorities

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience teaching and/or developing instructional materials for skills-based health education
• Knowledge of the substance use/vaping prevention landscape
• Working knowledge of NYC Public Schools systems and processes, or those of other large urban school districts

Pay

$47 per hour. Internal candidates who are selected for this position and who currently hold comparable or less senior positions within the DOE will not earn less than their current salary.
