About the role
The Po'okela special education teacher position is designed for individuals with a valid Special Education license from the Hawaii Teacher Standards Board. The role involves designing and implementing appropriate programming and instruction for students with moderate to severe cognitive disabilities, along with severe behavioral and/or social-communication deficits.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with the Po'okela licensed behavior analyst, on-site administrator, support team (behavioral technicians), and the student's parent and home school team to design and implement appropriate programming and instruction.
- Facilitate Individualized Education Plan (IEP) meetings.
- Exercise independent and professional judgment in carrying out daily functions.
- Maintain an effective work pace under pressure to meet deadlines.
- Grasp new concepts quickly and apply them effectively.
- Work effectively with others.
Requirements
Minimum qualifications include a valid Special Education license from the Hawaii Teacher Standards Board. Preferred qualifications include special education classroom experience in a K-12 school setting and desired knowledge such as planning and facilitating IEP meetings, exercising independent and professional judgment, maintaining an effective work pace under pressure, grasping new concepts quickly, and working effectively with others.
Qualifications
The Hawaii State Department of Education requires a Bachelor's Degree for certification. If hired without a Teacher's Education Program, a valid Hawaii teaching license must be obtained within 3 years of employment. Employees must enroll in a Program to continue employment with the Department and demonstrate active pursuit towards meeting Hawaii licensing requirements.

Pay
New employees can expect their first paycheck within the first 3 pay periods of their start date. Paydays are on the 5th and 20th (or previous business day) of every month.
Schedule
Teachers are represented by the Hawaii State Teachers Association and are represented by the union for collective bargaining with the State and employee representation.
