About the role
The OSP Fiber Technician position at Irby Utilities is responsible for single and mass fusion fiber splicing; preparation, installation, testing, and repair of fiber optic cable. The role involves interfacing with customers, performing tasks such as splicing fiber optic cable, using OTDR for testing, and maintaining accurate records.
Responsibilities
- Handle project work as it is assigned
- Accurately read and interpret splicing documents and splicing engineer packets
- Interface with customers to discuss job requirements, troubleshoot problems, and provide technical advice
- Splice fiber optic cable using fusion splicing equipment, both single and mass fusion
- Follow inspection processes and fiber testing using OTDR
- Analyze and prepare test results for customer presentations
- Repair fiber optic cable as needed
- Maintain plant cabling using bucket trucks or climbing gear
- Document and maintain accurate splicing records and job site notes
- Comply with all safety standards
- Stay updated with fiber optic design, splicing processes, tools, and techniques
- Protect company proprietary information
Requirements
- High School diploma or equivalent
- Ability to sit or stand for long periods, work in close quarters, crawl spaces, manholes, and confined spaces
- Ability to lift, carry, push, pull, or move equipment and objects up to 100 pounds
- Visual acuity for computer work, keyboarding, and operating related job equipment and hand tools
- Knowledge of automated or computerized systems
- Effective communication skills
- Customer-focused and team-oriented
- A valid driver's license and ability to drive long distances
Preferred Qualifications
- Technical degree in line work or fiber engineering or equivalent work experience
- Minimum of 1 year of demonstrated work experience
- Knowledge using Fujikura fusion splicing equipment
- Proficiency in ribbon splicing procedures
- Expert knowledge using OTDR
- Knowledge of Google Earth files
- Knowledge of Fast Reporter software
- Experience using Microsoft Office programs including Outlook, Word, and Excel
