OSH Undergraduate Student

About the Role

Occupational Safety & Health Division is seeking motivated undergraduate students for challenging, paid internship opportunities. These internships provide hands-on technical experience and professional development through a formalized work plan complementing the student's chosen area of study.

The student will work with the Occupational Safety & Health (OSH) Division, assisting experienced Industrial Hygiene and Safety professionals with activities that help keep LANL employees and work areas safe and healthy. Under guidance, the student may assist with workplace safety evaluations, data collection, documentation, field observations, and other activities related to identifying and reducing workplace health and safety hazards.

The internship offers opportunities to learn about industrial hygiene, occupational safety, Laboratory requirements, and how safety programs are applied in real-world work environments.

Responsibilities

• Assist with workplace safety evaluations, data collection, and documentation.
• Conduct field observations related to identifying and reducing workplace health and safety hazards.
• Research information sources (e.g., material safety data sheets, health hazard information module, regulations, standards) for health effects data applicable to work operations.
• Use automation applications such as spreadsheets, graphics, database management, communication practices, and compliance tracking systems.
• Utilize equipment and tools in a laboratory environment.

Requirements

• Excellent attention to detail and accuracy coupled with outstanding critical thinking skills.
• Experience working effectively as part of a team and ability to work independently.
• Basic knowledge and implementation of required safety practices in a laboratory environment.
• Basic knowledge of relevant health and safety regulations and requirements.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled (12 semester credit hours or full-time equivalent) in an accredited undergraduate degree-granting program (or international equivalent).
• Must have and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent).
• Entering first-year students must provide documentation indicating matriculation into an accredited undergraduate degree program.

Work Location

The work location for this position is onsite in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
