Responsibilities
- Applies, removes, and adjusts casts and splints as well as setting up or removing skin traction under the supervision of the physician or APP.
- Ensures proper fit and comfort of casts/splints, checking for signs of complications like skin irritation or poor circulation.
- Understands how to read and interpret radiographs for proper cast molding and wedging.
- Prepares and assists patients for orthopedic procedures, ensuring comfort and safety.
- Provides instruction and education to patients and patient families on proper care and maintenance of casts or braces.
- Places orders in the EMR for radiographs, cast removal and application, and application of braces per physician or APP's last appointment note.
- Documents orthopedic pathways and charging documentation for cast or brace applications.
- Performs sterile techniques for wound care, pin removal, joint injections, suture removal and skin staple removal.
- Observes and documents patient progress and reports any complications or concerns to the Orthopedic Team.
- Educates patients and families on post-procedure care, including the importance of follow-up appointments and any specific instructions for casts or splint care.
- Aids the Orthopedic Surgeon in procedures, including setting fractures, assisting in surgeries, and applying orthotics or braces.
- Aids the orthopedic residents in the ED with proper ACH protocols for casting, bracing and proper treatment care pathways for follow up.
- Makes proper arrangements, organizes ED teams, and gathers all needed supplies for any closed fracture reduction procedures.
- Assists with inventory control of supplies, including ordering and stocking materials.
- Answers questions from patients and families dealing with fractures or orthopedic surgeries providing emotional support and ensuring comfort and safety.
- Maintains and cleans orthopedic equipment, such as casting tools, braces, and splints.
- Ensures all equipment is sterilized and in working order and rooms are clean and organized for the next patient.
Qualifications
- Basic knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
- Excellent patient care and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to follow instructions and work as part of a healthcare team.
- Ability to stay organized and manage time effectively in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience in a healthcare setting preferred, preferably in orthopedics.
- Experience working with all levels within an organization required.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word or similar software is required. EMR experience preferred).
