Job Summary
Phlebotomist must provide professional medical services and quality care to our Veteran population. Located at VAMC in Viera, Florida.Duties
- Accurately identify patients and obtain proper specimens.
- Recognize and immediately report adverse patient reactions to venipuncture procedures to appropriate VA personnel.
- Collect specimens by venipuncture in the proper tube and correct order, ensuring adequate tube volume, no clotting, and minimal hemolysis.
- Process laboratory specimens (including aliquoting, storing, and preparing for transport to the main laboratory according to DOT and OSHA guidelines).
- Perform computer-related functions such as accessioning specimens.
- Refer problems or inquiries to VA team leaders or supervisors.
- Follow all established patient safety and infection control standards of care.
- Avoid specimen mislabeling and multiple venipuncture procedures on the same patient while providing care.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 2 years of college with a biological science degree or 6 months of specialized phlebotomy experience.
- Certification from an approved Phlebotomy Training Program by the National Phlebotomy Association (NPA).
- Direct work experience in a healthcare setting.
- Highly reliable in meeting or exceeding customer requirements and expectations.
- Technically proficient in phlebotomy skills, including fluency in speaking, understanding, reading, and writing English.
- Experience with elderly and difficult patients, including those in hospitals.
- Tact and personality suitable for interacting with ill, disoriented, sometimes difficult outpatient populations.
- Basic typing and PC computer skills.
- Active BLS/AHA certification (preferred).
