About the Role

The Orientation and Mobility Specialist II organizes, plans, and implements orientation and mobility services for adults who are blind and visually impaired, including those with additional disabilities. O&M instructors at The Hatlen Center also plan and implement financial management curriculum for students and act as case managers. This position reports directly to the Program Manager of the Hatlen Center.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and carry out individualized Orientation and Mobility instruction, including:
    • Pre-cane skills, cane skills, and concept development
    • Indoor travel, street crossings, and travel in varied environments
    • Use of public transportation, including paratransit, and group travel
    • Occasional work with dog guide teams
    • Use of orientation and mobility aids (maps, monoculars, assistive technology)
    • Route planning
  • Emphasize effective use of residual vision, tactile, and other sensory modes while reinforcing learning in other instructional areas.
  • Observe and evaluate clients’ progress, maintaining detailed tracking notes and preparing required reports.
  • Participate in and develop curriculum for weekly group classes across a variety of subjects.
  • Consult with other staff and community resources on behalf of clients.
  • Act as an integral member of the rehabilitation team, coordinating O&M and financial management training with other client services.
  • Participate in applicant interviews and help determine client placement at The Hatlen Center.
  • Engage in departmental and agency-wide planning and evaluation, making recommendations for future training and planning.
  • Maintain accurate records of all inventories in the teaching area.
  • Perform other duties as outlined in the position description.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in special education, rehabilitation, or a related field with an emphasis in orientation and mobility from an accredited university.
  • Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) certification through the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation & Education Professionals (ACVREP).
  • Knowledge of adaptive equipment for individuals who are blind or visually impaired.
  • Valid California Driver License with a minimum of three (3) years of good driving history; must be approved by the agency’s insurance carrier to drive agency vehicles.

Pay

The hourly wage range for this role is $50.00 - $51.00.

Schedule

This is a part-time position budgeted for 20 hours per week.
