Orientation and Mobility Instructor

About the role

The Indiana School for the Blind & Visually Impaired (ISBVI) is a nationally and internationally recognized resource for educating children and young adults who are blind or have low vision. The school serves hundreds of students annually, many of whom face significant challenges in traditional educational settings.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct Orientation and Mobility instruction and assessments to students.
• Develop and implement Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals and objectives for students.
• Prepare weekly lesson plans according to student IEP goals and objectives.
• Document student progress and provide progress reports and report cards as required by ISBVI.
• Participate in student IEP team meetings and parent/teacher conferences.
• Provide strategies and adaptations to teachers to promote successful outcomes for students who are blind or low vision.
• Provide training for teachers, service providers, administrators, and parents regarding orientation and mobility.
• Communicate on a regular basis with parents, residential staff, and other center-based staff regarding student progress and needs to ensure comprehensive and consistent instructional procedures and programming.

Requirements

• Ability to hold and maintain an Indiana Teaching certificate.
• Strongly preferred certification in Orientation and Mobility.
• Able to remain current with latest trends in Orientation and Mobility instruction.
• Able to participate in professional development activities such as regional, state, and national conferences and workshops.
• Thorough knowledge of federal, state, and agency rules and regulations.
• Able to plan student development programs that will best meet their needs.
• Effective communication skills.
