Southpoint Surgery Center (SPSC), an affiliate of North Carolina Specialty Hospital, is a new Ambulatory Surgery Center located between Raleigh and Durham in the Durham-Southpoint area. SPSC will provide a differentiated outpatient delivery model focused on providing high-quality, cost-effective solutions for surgical and related ancillary care for patients.

SPSC is a multi-specialty 22,298 sq. ft. facility accommodating the following specialties: Ortho, Spine, Ophthalmology, ENT, GYN, General, Urology, Plastics, Podiatry, Vascular, and Pain.

About the role

The primary objective is to assure delivery of comprehensive, safe, cost-effective, and appropriate nursing care for patients across the age continuum (4 weeks-geriatric), in accordance with established policies, nursing practice standards, and the Association of Operating Room Nurses.

This position should develop excellent working relationships with hospital staff and accept guidance and constructive advice to improve performance. Candidates must have the ability to be flexible and positively accept new responsibilities.

Responsibilities

• Provide individualized nursing care to the surgical patient, demonstrating an extensive knowledge base to support a variety of single and multi-system illnesses and/or injuries.
• Control the environment within the surgical suite and accept responsibility for developing and coordinating a safe plan of care utilizing standards of practice and within the framework set forth by policies and procedures.
• Demonstrate appropriate application of age-specific standards, policies, and procedures and guidelines in caring for adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients, including:
  • Administering medications based on patient's age.
  • Following age-specific standards of care during altered states of consciousness related to analgesia, conscious sedation, or anesthesia.
  • Using age-specific standards, policies, procedures, and guidelines to perform treatments and procedures routine for the unit/clinic based on patient's age.
• Incorporate cultural and developmental needs into the plan of care in collaboration with the patient/family in a developmentally and culturally appropriate manner.
• Demonstrate competency in the provision of nursing care according to established standards of nursing practice.
• Demonstrate excellent communication skills, high organization, and decision-making skills.
• Demonstrate ability to concentrate on many detailed requests despite numerous interruptions and prioritize tasks to maintain patient safety.
• Provide documentation of patient care in the patient record according to established standards.
• Participate and promote Universal Protocol and time-out procedure in every procedure.
• Work with a multidisciplinary team including surgeons, physician's assistants, anesthesia providers, SPD staff, Radiology, and all other OR team members to plan for patient care and provide optimal outcomes.
• Act as a patient advocate, assessing patients' needs through the perioperative experience and adjusting the plan of care accordingly while communicating with all team members.
• Participate in performance improvement activities, including collecting and analyzing data to identify quantifiable measures to maintain quality and promote desired outcomes.
• Participate in the development of patient care delivery systems, standards, policies and procedures, and problem-solving teams.
• Demonstrate familiarity with instruments and equipment related to Perioperative Nursing and manual dexterity in handling instruments.

Requirements

• Graduate of an accredited school of nursing; Associate's degree required; BSN preferred.
• Current licensure as a Registered Nurse from the North Carolina State Board of Nursing or compact multi-state license.
• BLS from American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) required upon hire.
• ACLS & PALS from American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) preferred; must obtain both certifications within 6 months of hire if certification(s) is/are currently not active.
• CNOR Certification strongly preferred.
