Summary
Under general supervision, but according to established policies and procedures, performs a variety of non-medical duties in support of Surgical Services. Such activities include, but are not limited to:
- Transporting patients to and from the Operating Room
- Picking up and/or delivering supplies, materials, specimens, cultures, and the like
- Assisting in preoperative scrubs
- Assisting in lifting, positioning, and supporting patients
- Cleaning and preparing equipment utilized in surgical procedures
- Preparing material for sterilization
- Assisting in cleaning and maintaining the operating rooms
- Assembling charge form packets
Responsibilities
- Transports patients to and from the surgical suite
- Reviews preoperative patient charts in order to ensure that all forms are signed and that all tests are completed; informs appropriate nursing personnel of discrepancies
- Assists in surgical room preparation by ensuring basic supplies are available such as blankets, solutions, and syringes
- Cleans furniture and equipment between cases
- Obtains necessary supplies and equipment required for specific procedures
- Assists in prepping patients for surgery; assists with preoperative scrubs; lifts, moves, and positions patients; supports and holds patients for spinal anesthesia injection and the like
- Routinely inventories, requisitions, receives, and stocks supplies in established areas, including sterile linen, instruments, scrub clothes, and the like in order to ensure availability to meet anticipated needs
- Picks up supplies and materials for Surgical Services from various areas of the Hospital such as pharmaceuticals, blood and plasma, as well as routine supplies required by the department
- Delivers cultures and surgery specimens to designated areas of the Hospital for analysis as appropriate
- Assists in general cleaning and maintenance of the Operating Room such as washing equipment, sorting and stocking supplies, cleaning rooms, washing stretchers, and changing light bulbs and the like
- Cleans, dries, packages, and seals a variety of supplies and materials to be sterilized, such as washing, assembling, and wrapping basin sets for sterilization
- Occasionally operates steam/water pressure sterilizers in order to clean and sterilize items
- Assembles patient record packs of charge slips, appropriate for specific surgical procedures, to be completed by others
Minimum Qualifications
- Basic Knowledge: High School Diploma or GED preferred; Ability to recognize changes in patient's condition and report such to nursing personnel; Ability to perform simple numerical calculations in order to calculate and requisition supplies; Knowledge of aseptic techniques in order to ensure proper cleaning of rooms, equipment, and materials; Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients with consideration of aging processes, human development stages, and cultural patterns in each step of the care process; Ability to read, write, and understand English, with ability to perform simple numerical calculations
- Experience: One to three months’ on-the-job training and experience
Work Environment and Physical Requirements
- Physical abilities to transport patients throughout the Hospital, to assist in lifting and positioning patients, and to clean and set up equipment
- Works in the Operating Room area and is exposed to odors, bodily fluids, etc. when assisting with patients
- Required to work for extended periods in a standing position when assisting with preoperative procedures
- Some exposure to chemical fumes and infectious disease when cleaning equipment and rooms
- Frequent standing, walking, lifting, and carrying in order to clean equipment and replenish supplies, transport patients and materials, and stock areas
- Hazards of injury are minimized by adherence to established safety precautions
