About the Role

Faculty members are responsible for delivering quality education services, engaging students, fostering learning, role modeling professionalism, and producing competently trained students prepared for professional careers. The Optometric Technician Instructor will provide up-to-date and fully prepared instruction to optometric technician students in an energetic and motivating manner, while managing classroom and lab activities.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare course plans and materials.
  • Deliver course lectures and facilitate student engagement, including one-on-one assistance.
  • Assess students and provide developmental feedback.
  • Deliver lectures and facilitate labs, either on-ground or online.
  • Grade projects, exams, and maintain grade books.
  • Provide progress reports and mid-term feedback.
  • Enforce HCI policies (attendance, dress code, etc.).
  • Monitor and assess student progress in achieving theory and performance requirements of the program.
  • Take and report daily attendance, enforcing tardy and absence policies.
  • Identify at-risk students and implement action plans for success.
  • Provide weekly feedback reports and maintain records of grades.
  • Maintain classroom, equipment, and supply needs.
  • Arrange for approved substitutes in case of absence.
  • Participate in orientation, staff, and faculty meetings (full-time required, part-time requested).
  • Attend graduation ceremonies (full-time required, part-time requested).
  • Work on retention plans and program development.
  • Participate in committees and knowledge-sharing forums (full-time required, part-time requested).
  • Ensure proper use of software: Course Key for attendance, Campus Nexus for communication, and Moodle for gradebook purposes.
  • Maintain relevant licensures, certifications, and required paperwork for personnel files.
  • Maintain a minimum of eight (8) hours of Continuing Education Units (CEUs) annually through professional development.
  • Encourage students to submit course evaluations and use feedback to improve course delivery.
  • Comply with all governmental regulations and accreditation standards.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements

  • Knowledgeable in course content.
  • Effective in directing and evaluating student learning and lab performance.
  • Prepared in Educational Theory and Techniques.
  • Computer literacy skills, including functional knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, Outlook, etc.).
  • Willingness to follow high ethical standards.

Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree with a major in any area of health sciences from an accredited college or university or equivalent (preferred).
  • Minimum of four (4) years of related practical work experience in the subject area(s) taught (required per ACCSC).

Physical Demands

The physical demands include those required in a professional office setting and higher education teaching environment, such as:

  • Communicating with coworkers and presenting to a classroom of students (including virtual classrooms).
  • Demonstrating procedures and techniques.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Ability to lift up to 15 pounds at times.

Working Environment

Professional office setting with moderate noise levels and controlled indoor climate. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.
