About the Role

An optician is an eye care professional who guides patients through the eyewear selection process, educating them on doctor recommendations to ensure the best possible vision. You’ll advise patients on lens options for their prescription while creating a fun, stylish shopping experience. This role blends creative design skills—maintaining optical merchandise displays—with administrative tasks like calculating co-pays, reviewing insurance eligibility, and preparing lab orders.

Responsibilities

  • Assist patients in selecting spectacles, providing education on lens choices, frame styling, and quality options tailored to their lifestyle and prescription.
  • Calculate insurance co-pays based on eligibility.
  • Accurately enter spectacle orders and monitor status daily to ensure timely delivery.
  • Receive and verify spectacle orders, notify patients, and schedule dispensing appointments.
  • Follow up with patients on their adaptation to dispensed eyewear and prescribed contacts.
  • Perform adjustments, repairs, and troubleshooting for patient eyewear concerns.
  • Educate patients on proper care for their prescribed eyewear.
  • Maintain inventory for the optical retail area, including lab supplies, and report as required.
  • Design and maintain displays of optical merchandise.
  • Monitor patient flow during appointments and communicate delays to other departments.
  • Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned by the doctor or practice leadership.

Requirements

  • Strong communication and customer service skills to build long-lasting patient relationships.
  • Creative design skills for maintaining optical merchandise displays.
  • Administrative proficiency in calculating co-pays, reviewing insurance eligibility, and preparing lab orders.
  • Ability to lift up to 15 pounds regularly (floor to waist), 5 pounds (waist to shoulder), and 5 pounds (shoulder to overhead).

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Physical Activity: Standing, walking, stooping, grasping, typing, and manual dexterity. Requires visual and verbal acuity to ensure accuracy in work tasks.

Work Environment: Professional medical office setting.
